The first season of the Creature Commandos animated series, Monster Commandos, has wrapped up, launching a new DC Cinematic Universe with James Gunn in charge of the creative team. Let's see what cliffhangers Gunn and the creative team have left in the show's 7 episodes.

These include introductions and cameos of DC's first heroes and villains, as well as tie-ins to previous DCU projects before the reboot. To the point.

Peacekeeper and Suicide Squad are canon

James Gunn said this before the show even came out, but still. The first season of The Peacemaker series starring John Cena is canon except for Zack Snyder's Justice League cameo. The events of the show were referenced by one of his characters, John Economos, Amanda Waller's sidekick and an ARGUS agent who appeared in the animated series. Peacekeeper himself also appeared, but more on that below. Well, The Suicide Squad is also canon, as they said in the first episode.

Themyscira, Bloodhaven, Star City, Gotham and Metropolis

  • The witch Cerci comes from Themyscira, the Amazon island where Wonder Woman is from.
  • Dr. Phosphorus was a criminal in Gotham until he was caught by Batman.
  • Galaxy Broadcasting System (GBS) - A Metropolis-based news company that employed Clark Kent, Lois Lane.
  • Dr. Phosphorus's wife is from Bialia, a country ruled by the villainous Queen Bee, and where they found the Scarab that gave Blue Beetle his powers and costume.

  • One of the soldiers mentions in a conversation with Frankenstein that he served with Rick Flag Senior in Jharkhanpur, this country is the home of the villain Ram Khan, could be seen in the Justice League of America comics.
  • One episode mentioned Bloodhaven, a small town where longtime hero Nightwing was.
  • The final episode told the origins of Mermaid (Nina Mazursky), who lived in Star City, Green Arrow's hometown.

Sgt. Rock and Easy Company

In episode 3, we learned that G.I. Robot fought in World War II shoulder to shoulder with Sgt. Rock, and his brave team of Easy Company soldiers. Sgt. Rock is DC's most popular non-superhero. He's a regular soldier, appeared in the 1959 comic Our Army at War, and has also been glimpsed numerous times in other series and consistently gets a cameo in any DC multiverse mouthpiece.

Recently, there was news that he might be played by Daniel Craig in the movie, with actor Maury Sterling voicing Rock in the show.

Dr. Will Magnus

In the same episode, G.I. Robot was studied by Dr. Will Magnus. He's the creator of the Metal Men robotics team. This is a group of androids whose names correspond with the metallic elements on the Mendeleev table.

Class Z villains from the DC

There are all sorts of random weirdos in the Argus prison cells, but some do come from DC comics. For the most part, the 10-plane villains of the old DC comics. For example, in the screenshot above, Animal-Plant-Mineral Man and Bloody Millipede. The former can be found in the comics and the Doom Patrol series, and the latter fought Wonder Woman in the 70s.

Shaggy-Man (fought the Justice League of America), Fisherman (fought Aquaman) among others can be spotted there. Congorilla, Nosferata, Khalis, Kemo, and Egg-Fu were in the prison canteen.

James Gunn himself has said in interviews that it was left up to the animators and co-showrunner Dean Laurie to decide who sits at the tables in this scene.

Weasels' lawyer

Elizabeth Bates is Weasels' lawyer. This is a reimagining of the Betty Bates character, the heroine of the Betty Bates comic strip, Lady-at-Law, which was published in the 1940s.

She not only defends justice in the courtroom, but also punches gangsters in the face. She's like Daredevil, but with eyesight and a beautiful brunette.

Justice League and other DC heroes

The largest set of cameos was given by episode 4 in the scene where Cerci showed Amanda Waller visions of an apocalyptic future. In an interview, James Gunn revealed who can be seen there and who he definitely implies is there. The others were added by the animators and the result was discerned/thought out by the fans.

Gunn himself has said that there's more Blue Beetle here because he wants to keep working with the character after the first movie. Will Sholo Maridueña return to the new Cinematic Universe to play Blue Beetle next?

Clayface

In the fifth episode, we learn that Dr. Ailsa McPherson (who taught at Gotham Academy in the comics) has been killed and replaced by Clayface, an enemy of Batman. Interesting fact: Clayface was voiced by Alan Tudyk.

In the show, Tudyk has voiced Dr. Phosphorus, Will Magnus, and he's also the voice of Clayface in another DC animated series, Harley Quinn. In the interview, Tudyk revealed that he really enjoys playing the moronic version of the character in one show and the sinister killer in another.

James Gunn recently announced a movie called Clayface, for which Mike Flanagan, (Dr. Sleep, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Haunting of Hill House) wrote the screenplay. Are we expecting Tudyk's voice there, too?

The sixth episode reveals the origins of Dr. Phosphorus. In the birth of the villain “participated” Gotham crime boss Rupert Thorne, who placed Phosphorus and took after a vengeful bloodbath. But it didn't take long to rejoice, because the dangerous monster was captured by Batman.

  • King Shark - the same one from The Suicide Squad here voiced by actor Diedrich Bader
  • Dr. Phosphorus
  • Weasel
  • The restored and improved G.I. Robot
  • Nosferata. In the comics, she appeared in the Superboy series.
