Video games have long since outgrown their role as mere entertainment products and have become a powerful storytelling tool. They offer rich worlds, charismatic characters, and deep narratives that easily adapt to the screen.

The rise of streaming platforms has also played its part, giving creators the opportunity to experiment with formats and project scopes.

Multimedia products help promote each other — games drive viewership, and many viewers purchase a game to spend more time in a beloved world. The popularity of online games during the release of their TV adaptations confirms this. So, which adaptations await us in the coming year?

TV Series

After the success of the first season of the series based on Naughty Dog’s popular game, viewers eagerly await the continuation. The second season will continue to explore the complex relationship between Ellie and Joel against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world filled with infected creatures and moral dilemmas.

HBO has confirmed that the series will cover the events of the second part of the game, though the story may be divided into several seasons to thoroughly highlight key moments. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will reprise their roles. The release is scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

Fallout — Season 2

Amazon Studios is preparing a sequel to the beloved series based on Bethesda’s cult post-apocalyptic game Fallout. The action will unfold in California and will likely touch on New Vegas. The series has retained the game’s signature style with dark humor, retro-futuristic atmosphere, and a well-developed world. We hope the second season will not disappoint. Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell will return in the lead roles. Filming began in early December.

Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft, in collaboration with Netflix, is set to release a series inspired by one of its most successful franchises — Assassin’s Creed. The show’s storyline will reportedly be independent of the games but will preserve the key elements: historical eras, secret societies, and the concept of the Animus. The series is in active development, with a premiere planned for Fall 2025.

Twisted Metal — Season 2

After the successful debut of the first season of Peacock’s "Twisted Metal", fans are expecting a sequel, presumably in 2025. Based on the game series of the same name, the show combines dark humor, a post-apocalyptic world, and spectacular vehicular combat.

Anthony Mackie returns as the main character John Doe, and Samoa Joe will once again delight everyone with the madness of the clown Sweet Tooth. The show promises even more action and surreal moments that made the first season so memorable.

Movies

Mortal Kombat 2

A sequel to the movie based on the legendary fighting game series is set for release in the coming year. The first film received mixed reviews but performed well enough at the box office for the studio to approve a sequel.

The second film will feature new fights and even more iconic characters from the game. One of the sequel’s highlights promises to be the appearance of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. James Wan returns as producer, and Simon McQuoid as director. The release date is scheduled for Summer 2025.

Minecraft

A film based on the game Minecraft has been in development for several years. The plot is still under wraps, but it’s known that it will focus on a heroic survival story set in a cubic world. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, with Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") directing. Fans hope the film will preserve the spirit of the original game, offering a unique visual style and humor, but judging by the first trailer, hopes are dim.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Another sequel on our list is the next installment of the relatively successful horror adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s. The film will once again immerse viewers in a world of terrifying animatronics and reveal more secrets about their origins. Director Emma Tammi returns, and the script promises to be even darker and richer in unexpected twists. The release is planned for December 2025.

2023 and 2024 have become important milestones in the development of video game adaptations, uniting the two industries, and 2025 has every chance to solidify this success and permanently intertwine cinema and gaming, which continue to intersect more and more.

From epic dramas to light-hearted comedies, films and TV series based on video games promise to impress both longtime fans and new audiences. Considering the quality and ambition of these projects, it’s safe to say that the future of video game adaptations looks promising.
