The 2024 Game Awards ceremony will celebrate its tenth anniversary, and naturally, Geoff Keighley wants to make this ceremony unforgettable. Several gaming journalists are claiming that we can expect some epic trailers that will blow players’ minds. Let's break down what we can expect from the event.

Who Will Win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024?

Let’s immediately address the most important category of the ceremony. Bookmakers are overwhelmingly favoring Astro Bot, with Black Myth: Wukong being another strong contender. While the PlayStation 5 exclusive is undoubtedly a worthy game, its niche appeal could work against it. In the Players’ Voice category, Astro Bot was eliminated quite early, but fortunately, the voting of regular players does not determine the GOTY winner.

Black Myth: Wukong is a more mainstream choice, and until recently, it was the clear favorite. The game has already won a Golden Joystick, so it’s not out of the question that it could also win at TGA 2024. A dark horse in the race is Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, simply because it made it into the nomination despite being a DLC.

What Announcements Can We Expect at The Game Awards?

Let’s start with what’s officially confirmed:

  • Mafia: The Old Country premiere. A leak suggests the game will release in the summer of 2025, and it's highly likely that this is true.
  • Borderlands 4. While it's not clear exactly what this will be, a new video is guaranteed.
  • Split Fiction, a new game by Josef Fares, creator of It Takes Two and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
  • Tekken 8 will reveal a new character, the last one for the first season.

Let’s take a closer look at Tekken 8. It's likely that the first character for the second season will be Anna Williams, as she was teased in the trailer for the Tekken World Tour finals. But this announcement will happen at The Game Awards, a very expensive show, which means the reveal should be big. It will most likely be a guest character.

The character the community wants the most is Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII. However, other popular characters from massive franchises are also possible. People would love to see Kiryu from Like a Dragon, but the chances of that happening are low since the character doesn’t fit the lore (for example, he’s firmly against hitting women). Bandai Namco might do something fun and announce Terry Bogard or Mai Shiranui, who recently appeared as guest characters in Street Fighter 6, but honestly, that wouldn’t warrant a slot at The Game Awards. So, with the community, we’re hoping they’ll show Tifa.

Rumors Around The Game Awards 2024

Journalists are saying that a couple of mind-blowing announcements are in store. Let's look at what they might be:

  • A new GTA VI trailer would fit perfectly, possibly even with a release date, but for such big projects, things can change quickly, so a simple trailer is more likely.
  • Half-Life 3. There has been talk that Gabe Newell himself might appear at the ceremony to present the game, but this is extremely unlikely. There are two reasons: firstly, it’s not Valve’s style, as they use different marketing strategies. Secondly, based on dataminer information, the game is not in a state where it could be announced yet. Valve’s internal tests are at a stage where the concept could easily be scrapped, so don’t expect this anytime soon.
  • The Witcher 4. This is a possible option. The game has entered full production, and CD Projekt Red could afford to release an obscure teaser similar to the first Cyberpunk 2077 teaser. It wouldn’t obligate them to anything, but it would hype up the crowd.
  • The Elder Scrolls 6. Todd Howard will be at the ceremony, and there hasn’t been any information on the project for a while, so why not?
  • A new project from Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann has stated that he’s been working on a new project for several years, but he doesn’t decide when and how the announcements will happen. Sony is well represented at The Game Awards, so it’s possible they’ll present a new game.
  • Bloodborne on PC. Just stock up on copium and believe until the very end.

The ceremony itself will take place in just a few hours, and we’ll be actively following it.
