When discussing the biggest hype events of the year, the Minecraft movie could have stood alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 or the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Unfortunately, the trailers significantly dampened that excitement, and now, critic reviews threaten to kill any remaining momentum for the film.

The first reviews have already hit the web, and on Metacritic, Minecraft has landed with a disappointing 48 out of 100. Journalists praised director Jared Hess (known for Napoleon Dynamite) for bringing his signature ironic and parody-driven style, making the film lighthearted and amusing.

The biggest praise from reviewers went to Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who play Steve and Garrett, respectively. Black perfectly embodies his character, bringing his trademark energy, enthusiasm, and humor. Meanwhile, Momoa surprised critics with how naturally he fit into the film’s absurd and comedic atmosphere.

However, the film's weak and convoluted plot is one of its biggest downsides. Some critics believe this issue stems from the six different writers who worked on the screenplay. Large-scale battle scenes come off as dull, and the sense of scope and depth that defines Minecraft is missing—partly due to generic CGI landscapes and some noticeable green screen effects.

Overall, critics agree that the film matches the lighthearted and unserious tone of the game, but it falls far short of the best films in its genre.
