The Potion of Harming is a potent tool, but using it requires caution. Without gunpowder, it can be dangerous to the player themselves, but with it, it turns into a deadly projectile. Since crafting this weapon—without exaggeration—requires multiple components, we have prepared a detailed guide for you, covering everything from crafting a Brewing Stand to brewing the potion itself.

What do you need to craft a Potion of Harming

To gather all the necessary ingredients, players should be well-prepared, as they will need to travel to the Nether and battle dangerous mobs. Here’s a list of everything required to create this instant damage potion:

  • Brewing Stand;
  • Fermented Spider Eye;
  • Potion of Poison;
  • Blaze Powder (crafted from a Blaze Rod).

Next, we will go through the process of obtaining each of these components step by step.

Crafting a Brewing Stand

You will need a Crafting Table, three Cobblestone, and a Blaze Rod, which is obtained from Blazes in the Nether. We will discuss this mob in more detail later in our guide. For now, take note of the Brewing Stand recipe—without it, alchemy is impossible.

Now, let’s move on to gathering the main ingredients. At first, it may seem like we are discussing unrelated things, but don’t worry! We will start with the easiest ingredient and gradually work our way to the hardest one.

Obtaining a Fermented Spider Eye

You will need Sugar, a Mushroom, and a Spider Eye. Simply arrange the ingredients as shown in the image.

A Brown Mushroom can often be found in biomes such as Swamp, Dark Forest, and Mushroom Island. Sugar Cane grows exclusively on sand near water. If you want to find it quickly, follow the riverbanks.

Perhaps the most unpleasant part is obtaining a Spider Eye. Unsurprisingly, this item drops from eight-legged creatures—Spiders. They are mostly found in caves and biomes like Plains, Jungle, Taiga, and Forest. You may also encounter them underground. Occasionally, they appear at night, but keep in mind that they will be aggressive toward the player during this time.

But would you really want to wander through the cubic world at night?

Brewing a Potion of Poison

Now that we have all the necessary ingredients, we can brew the poisonous liquid. Yes, that’s right! This potion will later be combined with a Fermented Spider Eye to create the one we actually need. To brew it, you’ll need:

  • Awkward Potion;
  • Spider Eye;
  • Blaze Powder.

Obtaining the first and third ingredients is one of the most challenging parts of this process. You’ll need to venture into the depths of the Nether and hunt down the fiery monsters that reside there. But let’s take it step by step.

Ingredients for an Awkward Potion:

  • Water Bottle;
  • Blaze Powder. This ingredient serves as a catalyst for brewing many potions;
  • Nether Wart.

The second ingredient, Blaze Powder, is obtained from a Blaze Rod, which drops from Blazes—dangerous flying enemies that attack players with fireballs. They spawn in groups inside Nether Fortresses, making them deadly opponents. Incidentally, Nether Wart, another essential ingredient, can also be found there.

A Water Bottle is one of the easiest items to obtain in the game. You’ll need Glass (which can be made by smelting Sand in a Furnace) and a Crafting Table. Arrange the materials as shown in the image:

Now head to the nearest water source and right-click to fill the bottle with water. Once you have gathered everything you need, brew the awkward potion. Place the ingredients as follows: Blaze Powder in the top-left slot, Water Bottle in the bottom-middle slot, and Nether Wart in the top slot.

Only after this step can you combine all the hard-earned ingredients and brew a bottle of Poison Potion. Place the resources as shown in the image:

The most important rule—do not drink it! Your character will immediately receive a debuff that drains HP. If you accidentally (or intentionally—we won’t ask) consume it, you can remove the negative effect by drinking a Bucket of Milk.

Now, we have everything we need to brew the main potion!

How to Brew a Potion of Harming

If you have gathered all the necessary ingredients, it's time to start real alchemy. Place Blaze Powder in the top-left slot, Potion of Poison in the bottom-middle slot, and Fermented Spider Eye in the top slot. Now, just wait a little, and your deadly weapon will be ready.

It is highly not recommended to drink the Potion of Harming in its current form, as it deals instant damage to whoever consumes it. After all, its primary purpose is to act as a grenade. Here’s how to make that happen.

Crafting a Splash Potion of Harming

You will need:

  • Potion of Harming;
  • Gunpowder. Dropped by Creepers.

Place Blaze Powder in the top-left slot, Potion of Harming in the bottom-middle slot, and Gunpowder in the top slot. After a short wait, you’ll have a weapon that allows you to attack enemies from a safe distance.

But that’s not all! Need more damage? Let’s make these grenades even deadlier! All you need to do is upgrade them to level two.

Brewing a Potion of Harming II

You will need:

  • Potion of Harming. Very important: the regular version, not the splash one;
  • Glowstone Dust.

Place Blaze Powder in the top-left slot, Potion of Harming in the bottom-middle slot, and Glowstone Dust in the top slot. This resource can be found in the Nether by locating Glowstone and breaking it with a pickaxe. Each block drops approximately 3–4 units of dust.

Just like the base version, this potion should only be used after converting it into a splash variant. So, once it’s brewed, take a little more time to craft a true bomb—one that will make your enemies reconsider their attack!

Alchemy in Minecraft is an incredibly engaging but complex process that requires patience. We hope you enjoyed our guide and were able to craft all versions of the Potion of Harming with ease!
