Genshin Impact is about to introduce a mandatory age verification system, with the feature expected to roll out in the United States by May 20. The update comes in response to concerns raised by the Federal Trade Commission regarding in-game purchases made by minors.
According to miHoYo, players will need to verify their age either when creating a new account or when logging into an existing one. The process itself has not yet been detailed, but players must complete the verification by July 18, 2025. Failure to comply will result in account restrictions, including deletion of chat logs and friend lists. Those who still haven’t verified by July 20 risk permanent account deletion.
This move appears to be part of miHoYo’s agreement with the FTC, which required the developer to implement protections for younger players. To settle the investigation, miHoYo has agreed to pay $20 million and place restrictions on features like banner pulls, which will now be unavailable to players under 16 in the US.
While this policy currently affects only the US region, it’s unclear whether similar rules will be applied globally. However, the collection of age data strongly suggests more age-based limitations could be introduced later.
