On September 12, Unity abandoned its controversial installation and reinstallation fee for all current and future users of the engine. The company reverted to subscription plans based on the number of employees in a studio and project revenue, while also expanding the range for free use of Unity. It is worth noting, though, that fees in Pro and Enterprise plans increased significantly.

In September 2023, Unity had announced plans to charge fees not only based on game sales but also on the number of installations. After exceeding a threshold (ranging from 200,000 to 1 million installs depending on the plan), studios would have had to pay between $0.005 and $0.20 per installation.

This new policy sparked a major controversy among developers, who were concerned about the risk of financial loss if their title became successful. Studios, especially in the indie sector, began canceling licenses and urging others to move away from Unity. Unfortunately, we cannot accurately assess how many developers abandoned the platform or how much this poor decision financially impacted the company.
