Insider Gaming and Tom Henderson are dropping another big bomb. Ubisoft is working on a brand-new Battle Royale game, and it’s basically a remix of Apex Legends. Codenamed Scout, the project has been in development for a couple of years and is said to feature characters very similar to Apex favorites like Pathfinder, Wraith, and Lifeline.
One source close to the game said Ubisoft is trying to grab players who’ve left Apex, hoping there’s still room for a new hero-based BR in the market. Ironically, this goes against Ubisoft’s own internal research, which recently questioned if the Battle Royale genre was starting to fade.
EA itself has admitted that Apex Legends isn’t hitting financial goals anymore and teased a huge refresh called Apex Legends 2.0 coming in the future. Whether that’ll revive the game is unknown — but Ubisoft clearly thinks there's still potential to cash in on Apex's style.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first go at Battle Royale, though. They launched Hyperscape in 2020, but it flopped and got shut down in less than two years. Since then, the company has reportedly scrapped nearly a dozen BR projects during development.
To add more uncertainty, Ubisoft recently teamed up with Tencent to launch a new division, leaving fans and investors unsure what direction the company is really heading in.
