  • Appearance: Gale is a young wizard with a cunning look and overwhelming charisma. His long chestnut hair falls carelessly over his shoulders, and his face is adorned with a light stubble and a neat beard. His brown eyes are filled with curiosity, and a few scars on his face hint at an adventure-filled past. He wears a long purple robe with brown accents, and holds his trusty staff.
  • Personality: Beneath his pride and pompousness lies a romantic who has endured complicated relationships. Gale often looks like he’s deep in thought, which is just part of his nature. Despite his pride, he is kind-hearted and always ready to help those in need.
  • Behavior: This charismatic wizard is very polite and sarcastic, enjoying witty remarks but never crossing into rudeness. Gale is cheerful and optimistic, trying to maintain composure even in the most difficult situations. He’s an avid reader and has even earned a reputation as a cook. He sometimes fondly reminisces about city life. Always willing to lend a helping hand, Gale appreciates this trait in his companions. He has a particularly soft spot for animals, and often speaks warmly of his cat, whom he left back home.

Backstory before the game

Gale was born in Waterdeep, one of the largest cities on the Sword Coast. From an early age, he showed extraordinary magical abilities, as if reality itself bent to his will. One day, defying his parents' wishes, young Gale summoned a winged cat — a tresym named Tara. This act marked the beginning of a lasting friendship that continued for many years.

Thanks to his magical talent, Gale was accepted into the prestigious Blackstaff Academy. His studies were difficult, mostly because he convinced himself of his own superiority, which didn’t sit well with the other students. This often got him into trouble. At one point, the young wizard tried to create a portal using the legendary Blackstaff, but the result was unexpected: Gale ended up in Limbo, where he encountered a Death Slaad. Only the intervention of an archmage saved the overconfident student from certain death.

Gale’s abilities caught the attention of Mystra, the goddess of magic. She made him one of her Chosen and became his mentor and lover. However, when Mystra’s feelings waned, Gale, blinded by pride, sought to prove his worth. He found an ancient tome containing a fragment of the Weave, hoping to impress the goddess.

When Gale opened the book, he made a fatal mistake. A dark entity entered his body, filling him with an insatiable hunger for magic. Now, the wizard is forced to constantly absorb magical items to control the destructive force inside him. Upon learning of Gale’s recklessness, Mystra severed all ties with him, leaving him to deal with the consequences of his actions alone.

Rejected and burdened with a curse, Gale isolated himself in his tower in Waterdeep, with only his loyal Tara to keep him company. He spent most of his time searching for magical artifacts to satisfy his hunger, and over time, lost almost all of his friends.

Unique abilities

TitleDescription

Netherese Orb Blast

Netherese Orb Blast
Gale is cursed, which means your party always has an explosive ace up its sleeve. Activating this ability causes the wizard to release a sphere from within, resulting in a massive explosion that affects everything around him. However, for Gale, this is an instant game over.

Racial traits

Gale is human, one of the most common races in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Unlike other races, humans don't have inherent magical abilities or darkvision. However, their versatility and capacity for rapid learning make up for the lack of innate talents. The ability Civil Militia reflects this flexibility, allowing humans to wield various tools and armor. Of course, this doesn’t apply to our wizard, as Gale doesn’t need such equipment.

Human Versatility is another racial trait, allowing Gale to select an additional skill to become proficient in. Additionally, his carrying capacity is increased by a quarter. While humans don’t receive racial bonuses to Intelligence or Wisdom, this highlights Gale’s natural gift — his successes are the result of hard work, talent, and determination. Gale BG3 Build

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are many classes, and for all of them except the rogue, players can only select three feats by level 12. Let’s take a closer look at the best feats for Gale.

  • Lucky: This is one of the top feats to consider. It's a useful ability for any character in the game, giving you three Luck dice charges that can be used in both combat and dialogue. These charges are restored after a long rest. We recommend using them rather than hoarding, so don’t be afraid to head back to camp with empty slots.
  • Dungeon Delver: Gale starts with low HP, and if he’s your main character, this feat can help increase his survivability.
  • War Caster: This feat grants advantage on concentration saving throws, which is crucial for wizards. Many of their spells require concentration, and enemies often attempt to disrupt it.

Where to find Gale

You can find Gale near the teleport point at Roadside Cliffs. Just approach the area to trigger a cutscene. Gale is trapped after escaping from a flying ship and asks for help. If you assist him, you can invite the wizard to join your party. However, if you're playing as a Dark Urge, you must successfully pass a roll against bloodlust, or you’ll end up tearing off Gale’s arm.

If Gale joins your party, you’ll eventually notice him acting strangely, showing signs of either sickness or pride. To uncover the truth, you’ll need to improve your relationship with him. Once your friendship is strong enough, he’ll ask for magical artifacts and eventually tell you about his curse.

How to romance Gale

To win over the charismatic wizard, kindness and altruism are key. Gale is open to relationships with characters of any gender and will appreciate it if you avoid unnecessary cruelty and deceit. He enjoys humor and is always happy to hear a good joke or a witty remark about enemies.

Though his heart is broken from his past relationship with Mystra and his condition is unstable due to his curse, Gale remains a passionate romantic, eager to find a new partner. In other words, Gale is open to relationships!

Gale Approval

By showing care and understanding, you can quickly earn Gale’s trust and affection. He appreciates being treated not as a powerful mage or source of strength, but as a companion, friend, or lover. Here are some actions that Gale approves of:

  • Force Astarion to offer more than just an apology after his first attack.
  • Calm the boar you encounter in Act 1.
  • Save Lae'zel by convincing the tieflings to leave, and recruit the githyanki into the party.
  • Stop the argument between Aradin, Beno, and Zevlor.
  • Side with the druids and tieflings, and help defend them from the goblin attack.
  • Save Arabella.
  • Refuse to open the gate for Minthara.
  • Convince Scratch to join your party.
  • Spare the Owlbear Cub.
  • Protect Astarion from the vampire hunter and don’t reveal your camp’s location if Astarion is absent.
  • Release Barcus Wroot from the windmill and ask for nothing in return.
  • Support Karlach during her conflict with Wyll.
  • Save Ulder Ravengard.
  • Intimidate Salazon to let your group pass through the hatch into the hideout.
  • Don’t reveal the Mysterious Artefact to the warrior Voss and his patrol.
  • Convince Lae'zel not to kill everyone before her transformation into a mind flayer.
  • Stand up for Karlach against Mizora during their dialogue.

How to Romance Gale

Romantic Scene. After saving the Druid’s Grove, you’ll get the chance to spend a night with Gale. During this romantic scene, the wizard will share a story about Tara, his magical cat. Show interest and kindness towards his pet, and in Act 2, a new romantic scene may unfold.

Competition. However, Gale doesn’t tolerate competition. Flirting with other characters will make him jealous, and he won’t forgive infidelity — whether it’s a fling with Halsin in the woods or Mizora in camp. If you accept someone else’s advances, Gale will demand you make a choice between him and the others.

Relationship development. Romancing Gale changes his personality. To win his heart, help him satisfy the magical hunger in his chest with valuable artifacts. Throughout the romance, encourage him to let go of his suffering and abandon his ties to Mystra. By doing so, you’ll help him regain faith in himself, rid him of suicidal thoughts, and sever his bond with his ex forever.

Gale’s Quest

Gale Baldur's Gate 3Image: Ensigame / Gale's Quest

Gale’s personal quest, The Wizard of Waterdeep, spans all three acts of the game. The main goal is to deal with the "ticking time bomb" inside him.

In Act 1, Gale joins the party at Ravaged Beach. You must rescue him from an ancient magical portal. During camp scenes, the charismatic wizard will reveal that he is cursed and must feed the void in his chest with powerful artifacts. If you don’t help him with this issue, the game might end prematurely — Gale will explode.

If you support Gale and reach Act 2, you can trigger a hidden ending. After a cutscene with two bosses and a massive brain, you can use the sphere inside Gale to explode, resulting in victory, but with catastrophic consequences.

In Act 3, you can meet Gale’s pet cat, Tara. The magical creature waits on the roof near the circus. For Gale’s main quest, you must visit the Sorcerous Sundries shop to find information about the Netherese Crown.

Later, Gale will meet Mystra at Stormshore Tabernacle. The goddess refuses to forgive him for his thirst for knowledge, which led to his curse. She hints that in the final battle, Gale may sacrifice himself by detonating the sphere, destroying the enemy.

Gale also has a hidden quest, "In Case of Death…", which activates upon his first death. You must perform a resurrection ritual within three long rests, or his body will explode, causing the quest to fail.

If you chose Gale as your main character, the plot remains the same, but with minor changes:

  • The Netherese Orb becomes the primary threat to stop.
  • The Sorcerous Sundries quest is altered.
  • Tara, Gale’s cat, will appear in camp as an NPC, similar to Scratch in a standard playthrough.
  • If you ask Mystra for forgiveness during the meeting in the Stormshore Tabernacle in the Lower City, she grants a special status, increasing all saving throw bonuses by +2.
  • Gale can absorb or cleanse corruption from corpses like Malus Thorm, Gerringothe Thorm, and Thisobald Thorm.
  • Unique dialogues will be available with his old friend, Elminster.
