Where to find mushrooms in Minecraft?
Got your backpack ready? We’re heading out to search for these incredibly tasty fruits! Just like in real life, finding them isn’t so simple, as their location depends on various factors, such as light levels, which must be no higher than 12 units.
Our first stop on this journey will be the Dark Forest/Dark Oak Forest. Here, mushrooms often appear under trees where there isn’t enough light for other plants. Nearby, there’s another essential biome — the Swamp. In the swamp, you can find a large amount of necessary resources, especially in the shade of trees and beneath their leaves.

Now, let’s head underground. First, we’ll find a hill or mountain, because just digging into the ground isn’t enough. We need caves created by the game, so let’s go explore. Typically, brown fruits grow at the entrance to caves where there’s not enough light.
It would also be wise to find abandoned mines, dungeons, and deserted buildings. Inside these structures, characters can also find fruits with a cap that have appeared due to low light levels.

How to grow mushrooms in Minecraft?
Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as growing mold in your basement. They are quite finicky, and players need to create several essential conditions.
- Light Level: as I mentioned earlier, mushrooms can only be planted at a light level of 12 or lower. This means they won’t grow in areas that are too bright.
- Planting Blocks: they can be planted on grass, dirt, stone, gravel, mycelium, podzol, soul sand, and several other blocks.
Mycelium and podzol are unique blocks because these plants can grow on them under any light level.
How to create a mushroom farm in Minecraft?

To start, you’ll need a space with low lighting that also has a roof. Yes, small fruits only grow if there is some structure above them, which is why they naturally grow under trees. Your options are limited: you’ll either need to build an enclosed farm or plant everything underground. Using mycelium or podzol as the soil will yield the best results.
To solve the lighting problem, you can place torches in recesses (simply surround the torch with blocks). This will lower the light level while preventing hostile mobs from spawning directly on the farm.
Growing giant mushrooms

You can grow giant plants with a cap from regular ones using bone meal. Plant a red or brown variant on a suitable block, such as mycelium or podzol, and then apply bone meal to the planted fruit to make it grow to enormous sizes.
Make sure there’s enough space above the mushroom for it to grow. Large plants require free space (approximately 7x7 blocks horizontally and 7–8 blocks vertically).
