Once again, the big esports project is trying to work out the partnership with cryptocurrency business. Riot Games made a deal with cryptocurrency exchange webbsite Coinbase. The deal will bring Coinbase branding to broadcasts of League of Legends and Valorant, plus special fan activities, events, and giveaways tied to both games.
According to Riot’s official announcement, Coinbase will be featured in sponsored segments during livestreams, along with exclusive promos and contests aimed at the fanbase. The sponsorship will be visible during esports broadcasts and various community events, though Riot hasn’t revealed how long the partnership will last or how much it’s worth.
This isn’t Riot’s first venture into crypto sponsorships. Back in 2021, they signed a deal with FTX, which became the main sponsor for the LCS. That agreement was supposed to run for seven years and be worth over $96 million. However, as we all know by now, things didn't work out well. In 2022, FTX filed for bankruptcy, and Riot had to take legal action to cancel the contract and reclaim part of the money owed.
Unlike FTX, Coinbase has a more stable track record and previously worked with esports organizer ESL. Now, it's stepping into a much larger spotlight as Riot’s newest global partner. Yet, to some people, that will still be a same type of a questionable partnership.
