Take-Two, the company that publishes GTA, was among the pioneers pushing the idea of a “$70” price tag for AAA releases. Some fear that they may move further with Grand Theft Auto 6 with pricing.
Perhaps the most basic version of GTA 6 will stay in the $70 range and won't cost $80-100, but various insiders say they may offer a special edition of the game for $100-$150 with early access.
Tez2 adds: ...Also, Rocktar / Take-Two already sell GTA Online and Red Dead Online separately, but GTA 6 will be the first game where online will be sold separately at launch and the story mode will be part of a “complete package” covering both games.
They'll have to factor the price of the separate online into the total cost. How much of the base price will the online cost be? And what will be the price of the story mode upgrade for those who bought the standalone [GTA 6 Online]?
By lowering the price of the online version, T2 may be able to attract players who cannot afford the $70 or $80 game. They have an advantage because those players will upgrade to access the story mode. This creates an opportunity as well because some players might desire story mode but be unable to pay for the upgrade.
They can then provide access similar to Game Pass by hooking up [subscription] GTA+. Players who keep playing the game instead of saving money for an upgrade will bring in more money for them. T2 wins again.
