Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot condemned the abuse and harassment directed at some of the company’s employees and partners. According to the executive, this is a significant concern for him at the moment.
Following the announcement of Assassin's Creed Shadows, some players criticized Ubisoft for featuring a Black samurai named Yasuke in the action game. Social media users claimed that the character is historically inaccurate, as he was a squire, not a celebrated warrior. As a result, Ubisoft employees involved in the creation of Assassin's Creed Shadows also began receiving online abuse.
Additionally, misinformation about the game started spreading online. For instance, a social media user on X posed as a Japanese scholar and pointed out historical inaccuracies in Assassin's Creed Shadows. It was later revealed that the comments were made by a U.S. resident, who subsequently deleted their account.
Despite the criticism, initial pre-orders for Assassin's Creed Shadows have exceeded Ubisoft's expectations, according to Tom Henderson. This occurred even before the company showcased the first gameplay footage. The game is set to be released on November 15, 2024, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
