Six years before the launch of Batman: Arkham Asylum, the studio Volition was already experimenting with the concept of a dark stealth-action game centered around the Dark Knight. In 2003, the team developed a gameplay demo for a Batman game intended for PlayStation 2. The project was never completed.
Interestingly, development of the stealth game began around the same time as Volition’s ambitious project Underground. The latter was canceled due to similarities with GTA III, and it’s likely that some of its groundwork was transferred into the Batman prototype. Unfortunately, this project was also shut down, and its potential never fully realized.
Although the gameplay demo video surfaced in 2024, new details have only recently come to light. They were shared by Andrew Borman, director of digital preservation at The Strong museum. He is working to preserve the history of Volition, which, despite its closure, left a significant legacy in the gaming industry.
