Gearbox Software took the criticism of BL3 to heart and implemented major improvements to BL4's co-op and loot systems. During a panel at PAX East, studio CEO Randy Pitchford stated these two areas had undergone significant overhauls and provided several examples of how they’ll work in the new game.

Regarding co-op, Pitchford confirmed players can now join or drop out of sessions at any time—no need to be in a specific location or zone. Additionally, a new "fast travel between agents" feature will let you instantly teleport to anyone in your lobby, even during boss fights.

As for loot, rewards remain player-specific but will now be more meaningful. Item complexity has been adjusted to prevent mechanics from feeling overwhelming. While the number of legendary drops in BL4 will decrease, their power and traits will feel more unique.

Another new feature: Borderlands 4 will have dedicated drops from day one. Every mini-boss and major event guarantees something special, ensuring every fight feels rewarding. And if you want to grind, it’s now easier—Gearbox is adding Moxxi’s Big Bonus Machine, letting you replay missions and bosses without save-scumming for specific loot.

Borderlands 4 releases September 12, 2025.
