Minecraft offers numerous ways to travel, but Elytra is the only item that allows players to glide through the air. This rare piece of equipment unlocks new horizons, enabling players to cover vast distances quickly and even perform advanced aerial tricks.

In this article, we will explain how to obtain Elytra in all game modes, as well as how to use, repair, and upgrade them.

Basic Information

Elytra is a unique and rare item that allows players to glide. It makes exploring the world faster and more efficient, especially when combined with fireworks. Elytra looks like real wings, while in a folded state, it resembles a cloak.

Unfortunately, they can only be naturally found in the End after defeating the Ender Dragon. Elytra is located in Ships, which are found near End Cities. However, there are other ways to obtain them in different game modes, which we will discuss later.

How to get Elytra in Minecraft in Survival Mode

Preparing for Battle

Before embarking on the journey, it's important to thoroughly prepare and gather all the necessary resources. First and foremost, you'll need Diamond/Netherite armor, ideally enchanted for additional protection. It's also crucial to bring a sword and bow with enchantments, such as Infinity or Power for the bow, so you can fight the dragon from a distance.

Don’t forget to stock up on plenty of arrows or a crossbow with fireworks to attack the enemy effectively. Potions of regeneration, strength, and slow falling will be useful to restore health, increase damage, and soften falls. Additionally, take food — golden apples are especially helpful — for emergency healing, and blocks, which will assist in reaching the crystals. To protect yourself from Endermen, you can wear a carved pumpkin on your head — this will prevent their aggression during the fight.

Activating the Portal to the End

Next, you'll need to gather all the ingredients to activate the portal to another dimension. This requires 12 Eye of Ender, which are also necessary for finding the Stronghold, so you’ll need quite a few of them.

To craft an Eye of Ender, you need Blaze Powder, made from the Blaze Rod dropped by Blaze mobs. These demons live in the Nether Fortress, a very hostile place that is fire- and lava-resistant, and their attacks ignite the player. Obtaining Powder is relatively easier since the spawning radius for these mobs is limited to the structure.

However, obtaining enough Ender Pearls, dropped by Endermen, is more difficult, as even in some automatic farms, these enemies don't spawn. You can only find them on the surface or in caves, relying on luck.

Once you've gathered enough resources, place them in the crafting grid as follows.

Finding the Stronghold

After that, you need to find the Stronghold, located deep underground. To locate it, use the Eye of Ender by placing it in your active hand and pressing the action button. It will fly in the direction of the structure, and when it reaches its approximate location, it will stop. You’ll then need to dig down and prepare for dark, ancient labyrinths filled with skeletons, creepers, and cave spiders.

Inside, look for the room with the portal and place the Eye of Ender into the portal frame. Once you’ve done this, jump into the portal and get ready for the battle!

Battle with the Dragon

The battle will begin immediately, but the dragon regenerates its health, so the first thing you need to do is destroy the End Crystals. You can either use a bow and arrows or fight your way to them and destroy them manually. After that, attack the dragon when it is in the air or landing on the portal. It's easier to use the bow at a distance, and the sword up close.

After defeating the dragon, a portal to the End Gateway will appear. To teleport, throw an Ender Pearl into it. Once on the islands, look for the tall, mysterious purple towers, which are part of an abandoned city. Nearby, there’s a chance a ship might be docked. This is a good sign, as inside the ship, you will most likely find the Elytra wings. Be cautious — Shulkers guard the ship, so it’s best to deal with them first.

Inside the Ship

Inside the ship, you’ll find an Item Frame on the wall. Break it to collect the Elytra wings and take any rewards from the chests.

Creative Mode

If you don't want to spend time searching for Elytra in Survival Mode, you can easily obtain them in Creative Mode. This method is much simpler and safer; however, the item doesn't offer any special advantages in this mode.

Open your inventory by pressing the "E" key, type "Elytra" in the search bar, and select the item from the list. Drag it into your inventory, and the wings will immediately be at your disposal.

Commands

If none of the above methods suit you, there is another option — using commands. However, cheats must be enabled either when creating the world or by opening the game for LAN connections.

To obtain the item, open the chat by pressing the "T" key on your keyboard. Then enter the following command.

/give @s minecraft:elytra

And press Enter. This command literally means: "Give me the Elytra item". After that, the wings will automatically appear in your inventory. This is a fast and convenient way to obtain the item without the need to search or fight for it.

How to Fly with Elytra

Now let's figure out how to use Elytra in Minecraft and how to upgrade them.

To equip the gear, open your inventory, find the item, and move it to the chest armor slot. Climb to a high place, such as a platform, jump off, and press Space to start gliding.

Use the W, A, S, D keys to control your movement:

  • W – Move forward;
  • A – Turn left;
  • S – Slow down or descend;
  • D – Turn right.

Fireworks Boost

To fly faster, you'll need Fireworks — they can be crafted using 1 Paper and 1 Gunpowder. The more ingredients you have, the farther the rocket will fly. Hold the Fireworks in your active hand and press the action button to give your character an extra boost, accelerating their flight.

How to Upgrade and Repair Elytra

To extend the lifespan of your equipment and fly longer, use the Unbreaking enchantment, which increases durability. To apply this enchantment, place the wings and an Enchanted Book into an Anvil, then combine them.

Place an Anvil, then right-click on it. Drag the Elytra into the left slot and leather into the right slot. Once the repair is confirmed, retrieve the restored item from the right slot.

Using the Mending Enchantment

To apply Mending to Elytra, first, find the corresponding enchanted book — it can be found in chests, fished from water, or traded with other players. Then, use an Enchanting Table or Anvil to apply the enchantment. Afterward, the item's durability will automatically restore when collecting experience points.
