If you thought that the Doom Slayer had already quenched his thirst for destruction in Hell, on Mars, and in Bethesda’s offices, we’re here to disappoint you. In DOOM: The Dark Ages, he returns to prove that there’s nothing more terrifying than demon-slaying in the medieval era with a shotgun in hand.
Story
The developers decided to dig deeper into the universe's history, which dates back to 1993. DOOM: The Dark Ages will show how the Doom Slayer earned the title of the legendary demon slayer. Players will uncover important lore moments about the universe.
For instance, how did the hero end up from Hell to Argent D’Nur? Why did he agree to work with the Night Sentinels? How did he end up in a sarcophagus again, and could this be a "strategic nap"? All of this will be revealed in May.
Setting with a focus on the "medieval"

In The Dark Ages, the setting has changed dramatically, bringing what initially seem like unfamiliar elements to the DOOM universe. While previous games focused on technology, here we see an emphasis on fantasy elements such as dragons and medieval weapons, including crossbows and heavy maces. This shift in focus in both the aesthetic and the world of the game will likely be one of the most noticeable changes for fans.
Gameplay

While the combat concept remains in the spirit of classic DOOM (brutal and fast-paced action with an emphasis on ranged weapons), the new game introduces additional mechanics such as melee combat and parrying.
Specifically, there is a mechanic for parrying enemy attacks, as well as throwable weapons like the chainsaw, which adds new techniques for interacting with enemies. Additionally, there are now rideable dragons and massive mechs for aerial and ground-based attacks.
Challenge Yourself

Unlike previous games in the series, DOOM: The Dark Ages offers the option to adjust enemy aggression, making the game more accessible for newcomers who want to reduce the intensity of battles.
Semi-Open World
Although the game is not a fully open world, the developers have incorporated sandbox elements that allow players to choose their actions and objectives while exploring more open environments. This adds a bit more freedom and lets players decide where to go and which tasks to tackle first.
There will be 22 levels in the game. This is more than in the 2016 re-release and its sequel, but not as many as in the original duology. However, the size of the locations will be larger, making DOOM: The Dark Ages the most expansive part of the series in this regard.
Arsenal
A few of the recent trailers have helped form a general picture of the "guns" the Doom Slayer will use. id Software has organized a true parade of weaponry extravagance for its prequel. Familiar guns from previous entries in the series have received so many upgrades that demons won't stand a chance if they encounter the protagonist on their path.
The following have been spotted:
- Legendary shotgun. A faithful companion from the original duology;
- Boomerang shield. It can be used not only for defense but also to maim;
- Skull Crusher;
- Plasma rifle;
- Nailgun (straight from Quake);
- Giant gun (a nod to the iconic BFG).
Will there be multiplayer?

No. id Software decided to focus all their efforts on the single-player campaign. Executive producer Hugo Martin from id Software openly admitted to GamesRadar+ that the team consciously chose not to get distracted by multiplayer experiments.
What’s causing controversy?

Some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the presence of female characters in the game, possibly a hint at feminist trends in the industry. This sparked a small wave of discussions, but this situation is not unique given the current trends in the gaming industry.
When will it release, and how much will it cost?

You’ll be able to dive into the bloody carnage on May 15th, and there are several types of passes to Hell:
- Budget ticket for $69.99. Includes the game and an additional skin for the Doom Slayer.
- VIP pass for $99.99. Grants access to the shooter 2 days earlier than the others (May 13th).
- Collector’s edition for $199.99. Includes a 12-inch Doom Slayer figurine, a copy of the keycard, and access to future DLCs.
Ready to tear Hell apart to heavy metal and the sound of breaking bones? DOOM: The Dark Ages looks very promising. There are no quests, diplomacy, or regrets—just plenty of weapons and a sea of corpses. The Doom Slayer is no longer just smashing demons. He does it with knightly grandeur and a face that absolutely doesn’t care what century you live in.
