With each major update in our favorite game, a new block with resources appears. However, we all know what’s most important. In the cubic world, there are two of the most valuable materials that will accompany players throughout their survival journey — wood and redstone. Wood is straightforward, but what is redstone used for in Minecraft?

The importance of dust is immense, as it’s the key to all mechanisms in the game. This thing will become an essential part of any base or mine since it can power minecarts, automatically turn on lights and doors, and much more. Intrigued? Let’s dive in!

It is a valuable yet slightly finicky resource, found only at specific levels in the Minecraft world. It will take some effort and exploration, but it's definitely worth it. Pack your backpack — we’re off on an adventure!

Caves and mines

Redstone ore is typically found between Y-levels -64 and 16, with peak generation around Y-level -59. The lower you dig, the more likely you are to come across ore. It’s quite advantageous to dig deeper, as you can also find iron, gold, and diamonds. However, don’t just drill straight down. I’ll share an interesting method with you!

Strip mining

Strip mining is one of the most efficient ways to gather resources in Minecraft. Go down to Y-level -59 and start digging long tunnels, leaving two blocks between each to cover a larger area.

Sometimes redstone ore appears near lava. If you’re digging tunnels or in underground caves, keep an eye out for lava pools — you might find what you need around them. Just be careful and bring a water bucket to avoid getting burned to a crisp!

This tricky ore can’t just be picked up by hand. You’ll need an iron or diamond pickaxe (others won’t work). By the way, I’ve already covered how to make a diamond pickaxe in Minecraft. Each block yields 4–5 units of ore, which is pretty good.

Mining is straightforward — you dig, find, gather, and you're set. But are there other ways to find this precious material? There are, and these methods can be helpful at the beginning.

Open chests in structures: in some interesting places in Minecraft, you can find redstone right in chests!

  • Mines (abandoned mineshafts): chests in minecarts often contain redstone.
  • Desert temples: some chests in desert temples have what we need.
  • Fortresses and Jungle Temples: the chances are lower, but still possible.

Trading with villagers: Minecraft villagers (mainly clerics) may offer you redstone in exchange for emeralds. If you have a good emerald farm or live near a village, this is a quick way to stock up without going underground.

Killing witches: yes, witches sometimes drop redstone! While this isn’t a guaranteed method, if you have a mob farm or just encounter a witch, kill it, and you might get it. Witches can drop 0–2 units of the material, so it’s not the most efficient method, but it can be useful at times.

Now you know everything about where to find and how to mine redstone in Minecraft. So go ahead! Start digging and create the coolest mechanisms you can imagine!
