What is a Stronghold in Minecraft

Ender PortalImage: youtube.com

A stronghold is an underground catacomb, preserved since ancient times. In addition to valuable items that can be found while wandering through the corridors, prison cells, libraries, and other interesting places, there is also a portal leading to The End — the final boss instance of the game.

You can activate the portal using Eye of Ender. We will go into more detail about this item in the next section. Keep in mind that it is impossible to find such a structure on your own, even if you dig for a long time. The game offers only one search mechanic, but there are ways that are considered somewhat unfair.

How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft

Eye of Ender

This is the legal and, as intended by the developers, the only correct way to search for the ancient structure. It can be crafted from the following materials:

  • Blaze Powder;
  • Ender Pearl.

Blaze Powder is obtained by crafting blaze rods, which drop from Blazes, while the main way to acquire Ender Pearls is by killing Endermen. However, they can also be purchased from a priest villager for emeralds. Ender pearls can also be found in stronghold chests.

After crafting the item, simply hold it in your hand and use it: the item will fly into the air for 3 seconds in the direction of the stronghold. However, be cautious! The item is consumable, meaning it can either fall back into your hands or disperse into the sky. Use it wisely!

You will need this item to activate the portal, so make sure to gather plenty of resources before heading out to find the stronghold. Otherwise, you risk leaving without challenging the dragon. In survival mode, you'll need about 30 of these items.

The Locate Command

There is also another, less fair way to find the stronghold. To use this method, you need to enable cheat commands in the in-game settings, and then enter the following command:

/locate structure stronghold

 if your game version is 1.20 or higher.

After obtaining the necessary coordinates, use the

/tp <x y z>

command to teleport to that location. Keep in mind that this marker is approximate, meaning that if there are no signs of an ancient structure at that point, you'll need to put in some extra effort to find it.

Stronghold Rooms

Library

The library is one of the possible locations in the stronghold, made of stone blocks, bricks, and book shelves. It is a spacious room with high ceilings and cobwebs that give it a mysterious atmosphere. It's not easy to find, as libraries are always hidden deep within the walls of the stronghold. There may be several such rooms in the game, so you might find more than one library during your exploration.

Chests with rewards are always placed near the bookshelves, where you can find enchanted books and other useful resources. If you're lucky, you might find rare items that will aid you in your future adventures.

Prison

The prison in the stronghold is somewhat like a confusing maze, where it’s easy to get lost and end up trapped. Narrow corridors, bars, and dim lighting create a grim atmosphere, and numerous mobs make it a dangerous place. Here, you might encounter skeletons, zombies, and even creepers lurking in dark corners. Be careful as you explore the prison, as something dangerous might be waiting around every corner. The danger here doesn't come from the prisoners, but from the mobs.

Fountain

You can't miss this room. The fountain in the center of the location gives the place a magical feeling, like the echo of long-forgotten magic seeping through the stronghold’s walls. Light filtering through cracks in the stone plays on the water's surface, adding a mystical look to the room. Perhaps rituals were once performed here, or it served as a place of solitude for the stronghold’s inhabitants.

Secret Rooms

The walls of the stronghold can and should be dug into, as hidden secret rooms are often concealed behind them, full of surprises. In these secret chambers, you can find chests with valuable resources, enchanted books, and rare equipment, hidden from prying eyes. However, don't forget about the traps — some are hidden mechanisms that activate arrows. While navigating these challenges, keep an eye on your health and be prepared for surprises, as any wrong move could be your last.

Altar

A very strange place, which at first glance doesn’t seem like an altar at all. The room looks eerie, with its walls made of stone bricks, covered in the marks of time. The stone in the center resembles a grim prison rather than a sacred place, and around the altar, there are torches. Only when your eyes adjust to the dim light will you realize that this is not a dungeon, but an altar left by ancient people.

Stronghold Mobs

Fortunately, the structure is guarded by relatively weak enemies that even a player with basic iron armor can handle. Inside the stronghold, you will encounter skeletons, creepers, and many Silverfish.

While the stronghold contains places worth visiting and rewards worth collecting, you’ll also find incredibly powerful opponents waiting for you inside its walls, from creepers and skeletons to the tiny Silverfish.

Rewards

Note that the rewards are random. This means you may either get very lucky or not. Here are some valuable items that may surprise you:

  • Enchanted book;
  • Iron chestplate;
  • Iron sword;
  • Iron horse armor;
  • Gold horse armor;
  • Diamond horse armor.

Portal to the Ender Dragon

Every game has its beginning and end. The same can be said for Minecraft. While playing in survival mode, players will inevitably face the question of what to do next when all the gear is collected and the world is fully explored. The next stop is the stronghold, which houses the portal to the final boss — the Ender Dragon.

Minecraft stronghold is not only a structure that players pass through to finish the game, but also a place where they can have a great time exploring the locations and fighting strong monsters. It would be a shame to spend so much time and effort searching for this place and not fully explore the stronghold or meet all of its inhabitants, wouldn’t you agree?
