While the CoD series is drowning in negativity from both players and developers, Battlefield is trying to climb out of its grave, and dozens of "new" shooters are shutting down servers before they even break even, Fortnite is thriving. Seriously, if you set aside the developer controversies, the game itself is a rare island of tranquility amidst the storm.
As befits an ideal live-service game (a title Fortnite has honestly earned), the project is constantly updated, and the long-awaited Chapter 5, Season 4 has recently been released, coinciding (haha!) with the announcement of Marvel movies featuring Doctor Victor von Doom.
I won't go into detail about every new feature or recount the entire storyline. I want to share my impressions of the new season and explain why you should start playing Fortnite right now.
Doom Changes the Locations
Of course, the new season greets us with a revamped map. As always, the locations are diverse, unique, and the level design maintains a high standard of quality. Honestly, I've never encountered a poorly designed location here!
Not only does everything look beautiful, but it also provides dynamic gameplay. Let's start with the hottest spots on the map — Castle Doom and The Raft. The fiercest battles take place here because the best loot is hidden in these locations. Right from the start of the match, it’s chaos, with the intensity heightened by bosses and their minions.
The most valuable items in these areas are Marvel gear, charms, and mythical weapons from the bosses. It’s worth the risk, though you can find superhero weapons in less intense areas as well.
In general, landing here always gives you chills. Since there will be a lot of opponents, firefights never cease. If you're an experienced player, I recommend dropping into these spots to grab all the valuable items and prevent your opponents from getting them. Facing well-equipped opponents who’ve cleared the castle and prison is painful.
Another hotspot (or rather, a line) where you’re sure to get into a lot of firefights is the train. It circles through the center of the map, and you can find some very cool weapons in the carriages. Small chests yield useful items like medkits, ammo, shields, and weapons ranging from white to blue (sometimes even purple) rarity. The large chest drops blue, purple, and gold weapons.
This is a great opportunity to gear up in the early stages of the game, but be aware that the train is often hunted. Plus, the large chest takes time to open, so you'll have to defend yourself.
Where Else to Find Cool Gear?
To upgrade quickly, you don't necessarily have to jump straight into the "meat grinder". First, sometimes the train is completely empty, and you can quickly grab gear from the small chests. I never miss the chance to do this if the train is nearby.
Additionally, superhero gear can be found in large quantities at Mount Olympus, Nitrodrome, and The Underworld. The last location is notable for its green water, which allows you to teleport a few meters ahead up to three times (you can recharge jumps by submerging in the water again).
There are also bunkers with gear scattered around the map, and I love these things! At a certain point in the match, the bunkers start signaling their impending opening, and a battle ensues. It's definitely worth participating in the fight because inside you'll find literally everything: shields, gold, weapons of all types and levels, and Marvel gear.
What to Shoot With in Fortnite?
War Machine's gear! Sorry, but these things keep bringing me back to the game. The set consists of a jetpack for flying, a shoulder-mounted automatic gun, and a combat arsenal with machine guns and rockets. Despite being mythical, the combat arsenal can be ignored as the shooting mechanics aren't very convenient. However, passing up the jetpack and shoulder gun would be a crime.
The ability to fly gives you a lot of tactical freedom and the chance to quickly escape from the approaching storm. Many players still struggle to hit a flying target, so it's better to be that target. Meanwhile, the shoulder gun fires automatically, and it's an awesome feature! Essentially, it will alert you to nearby enemies.
Another cool item is Captain America's Shield. This weapon was in the game before but was removed for balance adjustments. Now, it can block damage while sliding or charging, and it also deals decent damage, though it attacks slowly.
The next superhero weapon is Doom's Gloves, which I have mixed feelings about. The gloves work like Iron Man's repulsors, but the attacks are very slow and inaccurate. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see many players using this weapon.
Fortnite also introduced dual submachine guns and the Sovereign Shotgun. I wasn't thrilled with these weapons, but they aren't bad either. The shotgun is slightly more accurate than the Gatekeeper, and the submachine guns deal good damage but have a long reload animation (the character simply discards them and pulls out new ones).
Why Start Playing Fortnite Now?
To fully answer this question, a separate article would be needed, and I'll definitely write one in the future. In short, the new season has brought even more dynamic and diverse gameplay to Fortnite. After playing classic competitive shooters with strict metas, constantly changing balance, grinding, and farming, Fortnite feels like a breath of fresh air.
Here, there are no broken tactics, suffocating balance, or grinding for in-game currency. There are no screaming maniacs in voice chat or toxic communities. Fortnite is a place where you can relax, and even losing here doesn't evoke negative emotions. Plus, now you can play as a Marvel hero, and the upcoming seasons will only get better.
