Out of the blue, in the hot August, Black Myth: Wukong was released, exploding onto the charts of summer releases and complex novelties. Game Science created a truly challenging project, distinguished by stunning visuals, smooth procedural animations, engaging gameplay, captivating locations, and considerable difficulty.
It's no surprise that Monkey King garnered praise from all over the world, leaving a lasting impression on many users. Despite the game being filled with surprises in the locations and even side storylines, Wukong has an end. If you want to continue the amazing, challenging, and mysterious adventures, our selection of 15 similar games will help you not get bored and test your skills once again!
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
- Developer: FromSoftware Inc
- Release Date: March 22, 2019
- Download: Steam
Sekiro is a representative of the Souls-like genre, where we take on the role of The Owl (the main character's name), who, following the Shinobi code, must take revenge on the killers of his master.
Like Wukong, SSDT draws inspiration from Asian mythology, focusing on Japanese legends. The locations are nonlinear and incredibly beautiful, and the gameplay is similar, except for a few rules, the main one being that Sekiro is much harder.
As with all classic Souls-like games, FromSoftware’s project heavily punishes death, whether it be due to carelessness or ignorance. Unlike Black Myth, upgrading The Owl is much more challenging, but also more fun: if the player gets distracted, they can easily lose part of their progress.
If you not only wish to continue wandering through myths and legends of the ancient world but also want to challenge yourself against the toughest enemies, Sekiro can be the game that captivates players for many dozens of hours. Sharpen your katana, gather concentration, and listen to the rhythm of the music — it will better guide the player in combat than any other tip.
Nioh 2
- Developer: Team Ninja
- Release Date: March 13, 2020
- Download: Steam
The story centers around a demon hunter named Hide. He lives somewhere in the wilderness and occasionally helps local villages fight off demons. One day, a wandering merchant of spirit stones arrives and persuades the hero to become his companion. Thus begins an adventure that players will long remember, with a toothache-like pain they’ll feel when recalling certain battles.
Nioh 2, like Wukong, is dedicated to the myths and atmosphere of Asia. Moreover, Hide’s adventures are partly based on real historical events.
The structure of the project hasn’t changed a bit compared to the original: we explore locations, discover shortcuts, and die at every step. The game is still divided into separate missions, so there is no seamless world, but it’s hard to criticize the studio for this, as there were reasons behind it.
Team Ninja places a great emphasis on storytelling and atmosphere, which comes at the expense of variety, but guarantees an extremely engaging and unique experience. Sharpen your blade and take on the form of a youkai to fend off the demon attacks!
God of War: Ragnarök
- Developer: Santa Monica Studio
- Release Date: November 9, 2022
- Download: Steam
Ragnarök marks the first step away from Asian settings, swiftly transporting us to cold Scandinavia. The northern journey of the god of war, Kratos, and his son Atreus inadvertently sets in motion the end of the world, known as Ragnarök. But before that, many more events must unfold, and enemies across all Nine Realms are not idle. The heroes will not only face new and old foes but also ponder the question, "Can fate truly be defied?"
God of War resembles Wukong not only in gameplay but also in atmosphere, which might come as a surprise. Unlike previous parts, the new GoW refines its combat system, taking the series' path from slasher to RPG and now to an arcade-like Souls-like. As in Black Myth, we will face difficult enemies and giant bosses, although in some cases, the monkey makes you sweat even more.
However, GoW is closer to Wukong in its overall tone. A mythical being embarks on a journey to fulfill mythical prophecies and confront mythical enemies. While the wild jungles have been replaced by freezing cold, the essence of the stories, the manner of narration, and even the morals of the small stories are strikingly similar.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
- Developer: PlatinumGames
- Release Date: January 9, 2014
- Download: Steam
This title is one of the craziest and most challenging slasher games in the entire universe. The story places the player in control of Raiden, a cyborg who, by a twist of fate, gets drawn into a civil war. To defeat enemies and stop the conflict, the protagonist must go through a journey of self-acceptance and learn that it's not enough to have power—you need to know how to use it.
At first glance, MGR seems nothing like Wukong, but that's far from true. While the mythological context is lost, these are almost the same game. Just as Monkey King must harness his abilities, Raiden must learn to master his strengths and accept his weaknesses. Throughout the story, we encounter many enemies and giant, seemingly invincible bosses.
In terms of gameplay, Revengeance differs from Black Myth but is equally dynamic with very challenging battles. Along with a wide range of abilities and upgrades, we find similar mechanics within. However, a word of caution: in terms of difficulty, MGR is on par with Sekiro, making Wukong’s adventures feel like a walk in the park by comparison.
Sifu
- Developer: Sloclap
- Release Date: November 9, 2022
- Download: Steam
This project is one of the industry's icons. The story involves players becoming a kung fu master, focusing all their energy on defeating the killers of their father. The main feature is that with every defeat, the protagonist ages, limiting the "restart" button and forcing players to approach each step with more thoughtfulness.
Like BM, Sifu places a high emphasis on combat scenes, featuring a spacious and highly dynamic fighting system. Light attack, strong attack, block, parry, and dodge—the set of moves is standard. The difficulty lies in the fact that no indicators appear above the enemies, so the only way to know they are attacking is when the attack has already started. Over time, you learn to react in time—this is the first step in preparing for truly tough challenges.
These challenges are plentiful in Sifu, as each new location becomes harder than the last. You’ll not only need to level up your character but also learn to use a whole arsenal of skills. Despite the almost complete absence of a story, the title can captivate players with both its combat and unique atmosphere for dozens of hours.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
- Developer: Team Ninja
- Release Date: March 3, 2023
- Download: Steam
This game takes players back to ancient China, or rather, to an alternate version of it. The world of Fallen Dynasty is struck by a demon invasion, and the hero must discover and eliminate the cause of the disaster.
The gameplay of Wo Long and Wukong is as similar as two peas in a pod. The only difference is the ability to choose weapons. The range of abilities is also slightly smaller than in Black Myth.
The dynasty beautifully captures and portrays ancient China. The locations are well-designed, resembling a labyrinth filled with shortcuts and places where treasure chests or interesting events may be found. Players will need to put in significant effort to find all the scattered secrets across the locations. We’ll visit classic villages, jungles, deserts, and even snow-covered mountains.
The fights in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty are not only challenging and dynamic but also cinematic. At times, the camera angles are breathtaking, and the beautiful graphics allow you to truly enjoy the views right up to the final credits.
Elden Ring
- Developer: FromSoftware Inc
- Release Date: February 25, 2022
- Download: Steam
When recalling similar projects, it’s impossible to ignore FromSoftware. The latest creation from the creators of the Souls-like genre features a characteristically intricate storyline, a dark atmosphere, and stunningly difficult gameplay.
Like Wukong, Elden Ring is full of difficult bosses and branching locations, where not only treasure chests and battle scenes are hidden but also optional storylines. Since the Interworld isn’t based on any specific mythology, players will experience truly unexpected discoveries and plot twists. No surprise, considering the story was written by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George Martin.
The open world of Elden Ring is truly captivating. Exploring it is almost more enjoyable than fighting. The dark aesthetic fully envelops you only once you’ve dealt with the main challenges. It’s then that a sense of calm sets in, allowing you to take in the environment, enjoy the walk, and the silence. It feels refreshing not to be overwhelmed with unnecessary information, markers, or indicators.
However, to achieve this, you’ll need to learn Elden Ring. The complex combat system will surprise you with its originality, but we won’t give you any hints — discovering the local secrets is something that’s fun to do on your own. It’s difficult, but worth it.
Darksiders III
- Developer: Gunfire Games
- Release Date: November 27, 2018
- Download: Steam
Darksiders III is an excellent slasher with elements of Souls-like. The similarities with Black Myth don’t end there, but to find more, players need to delve deeper into the third part of the franchise.
The story follows the apocalypse arriving on Earth sooner than expected, turning the planet into a battleground between angels and demons. As Fury, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, players must hunt down and defeat the Seven Deadly Sins. Here, we see a familiar pattern — a mythical hero battles mythical foes against the backdrop of mythical events.
Darksiders III is a game with character. It requires players to study abilities, think about what and how to upgrade, and then how to use new skills. It makes you hoard souls, as there’s always something to spend them on, gather or buy shards and artifacts, and learn how to fight both efficiently and stylishly. Some puzzles will even make you think hard.
All this is necessary to grow stronger and access previously unreachable places. There, you’ll find a wealth of new epic locations, plot twists, amusing banter with the Watchers, powerful enemies, and cool bosses. This level design approach brings the project even closer to Wukong.
Besides, Darksiders III is simply a great game. Its high dynamics, interesting upgrades, and a storyline filled with both drama and humor make for an excellent choice for a few entertaining evenings.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Developer: Respawn Entertainment
- Release Date: November 15, 2019
- Download: Steam
Fallen Order can barely be called a Souls-like. In reality, it’s just a relatively challenging RPG that incorporates some elements of the most difficult genre. The story tasks players with attempting to restore the Order, where, as Jedi Cal Kestis, they must search ancient tombs to find the key to a vault of vital data.
Like Wukong, Fallen Order tells a mythical story, characteristic of ancient legends. No surprise, as the franchise is fantasy wrapped in a sci-fi setting.
Fallen Order combines elements of action-adventure and metroidvania. Exploring locations often utilizes an advanced traversal system, creating a sense of dynamism even in more meditative moments. Combat takes place with a legendary weapon — the lightsaber. Although it feels more like a club, this critique is directed at "United," not Fallen Order, and in the context of games similar to Black Myth, it doesn’t seem like a drawback.
If you want to feel the spirit of true adventure again, rest assured that this new entry in the saga is a perfect choice for that.
Mortal Shell
- Developer: Cold Symmetry
- Release Date: October 18, 2020
- Download: Steam
Mortal Shell is a captivating short Souls-like game that will immerse players in a dark world without taking too much time. The project was developed by a team of just fifteen people who poured their hearts into it, creating an exciting dark fantasy world.
Mortal Shell is similar to Monkey King not only in genre but also in gameplay. In both games, the fights are engaging and spectacular, though not overly difficult — sometimes very hard, but bearable. However, Wukong stands out by focusing on the clever use of tricks.
In MS, there’s only one trick, but a variety of tactics revolve around it. The protagonist's shell can petrify, causing the hero to freeze in the pose they were in when using the ability. Petrification completely absorbs damage, allowing players to perform various stunts, such as freezing mid-attack to stun the enemy and strike at the perfect moment.
The world and graphics are pleasant, and the animations look very decent. The only common complaint about Mortal Shell is its short length. The game is indeed brief, but it manages to showcase all its aspects, leaving no regrets by the end credits over a single second spent. You can judge for yourself.
Xuan-Yuan Sword VII
- Developer: DOMO Studio
- Release Date: October 28, 2020
- Download: Steam
The seventh part of the little-known Xuan-Yuan Sword franchise! We’re sure you’ve never heard of it because this is the second game in the series to come out on Steam with English language support. However, it’s worth checking out as we once again journey to China.
The story tells us about Taishi Zhao and his sister, who embark on a dangerous adventure to find a powerful scroll. The plot will reveal the dangers of their journey, sincere friendship, and betrayals. The drama is built magnificently, steeped in the color of ancient China. This is further enhanced by the stunning visuals. Special mention goes to the sound design, which sometimes makes it feel like you’re watching a good movie.
Inside the project, we find a familiar mix — RPG and slasher, which doesn’t exactly mirror Black Myth, but rest assured, you already know which buttons to press in battle. The fights are dynamic and challenging, the upgrades are interesting, varied, and easy to grasp — what more could you want?
Although Xuan-Yuan Sword VII may be a "dark horse" for many, we highly recommend it. Once you get past the introductory cutscenes, you’ll realize you’ve found exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Lies of P
- Developer: NEOWIZ
- ReleaseDate: September 18, 2023
- Download: Steam
If you’re familiar with the Souls-like genre, this project needs no introduction. Along with others, we’ll now dive into what P lied about and why this makes him similar to the monkey.
Let’s start with the obvious — the combat system. In addition to belonging to the same genre, Pinocchio prefers to parry attacks, which depletes the enemy’s stamina. So, the case is solved: P lied, and his real name is Alidoro, and he hails from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice! You can draw analogies to the combat system as mentioned earlier in this article. Without going into details, the comparison is fitting: the gameplay for Pinocchio and Alidoro is similar, so fans of Wukong won’t be disappointed.
Lies of P masterfully captures the dark essence of the original, maintaining most key events while adapting and expanding the story. The setting is well-executed: the locations are canonical and quite open, the enemies are terrifying and diverse. Facing them is not only interesting but also visually spectacular.
Like Pinocchio, I’ve misled you a little. Lies of P isn’t that similar to Black Myth: their stories and settings differ significantly. However, this doesn’t make the project any less worthy of your attention. Once you start playing Pinocchio for a similar combat experience, you’ll fall in love with the local charm, mysterious characters, and the gloomy landscapes of Krat.
Ghost of Tsushima
- Developer: Sucker Punch
- Release Date: July 17, 2020
- Download: Steam
Ghost of Tsushima is one of the standout representatives of Action RPGs. Alongside the samurai Jin, we find ourselves in the era of the first Mongol invasion. Fate has a tough test for the warrior: after Tsushima island puts up a fight, the protagonist remains the last surviving samurai. This event becomes the starting point of his transformation into the Ghost, who will rally the people to fight and defeat the enemy, though the cost will be high.
Ghost of Tsushima shares a few similarities with Black Myth. First, of course, is the legends of ancient Asia. While Tsushima doesn’t lean too heavily into mysticism, the invaders are often equated with demons, and the story is full of ambiguities that leave room for the imagination.
Second is the combat. While its structure differs greatly, GoT resembles Wukong in the complexity of its battles: they are well-crafted yet demanding, often requiring not only quick reflexes and attention but also tactical thinking. Additionally, some of Jin’s abilities will surely please you — they are similar to Wukong's skills.
The only thing players should be truly prepared for is the difficulty. I’m not talking about the gameplay here, as I believe you’ll handle it after conquering Black Myth. Tsushima will test the player’s moral resilience, as its storyline is the darkest among the games in this list.
The Surge 2
- Developer: Deck13
- Release Date: September 24, 2019
- Download: Steam
The sequel to the popular Souls-like surprised fans in two ways. First, the second part turned The Surge from a mediocre game into a good one. Second, the addition of mysticism added intrigue to the story and made the plot less grounded.
The game offers an interesting open world, an exciting narrative, and intense battles. Among the enemies, players will encounter both powerful foes and colossal bosses that might take hundreds of attempts to defeat.
What connects it to Wukong is not just its high difficulty, but also the story of a hero following a path similar to those of mythical figures.
If you’re open to a drastic change in setting, The Surge 2 will be an excellent choice.
9 Monkeys of Shaolin
- Developer: Sobaka Studio
- Release Date: October 16, 2020
- Download: Steam
9 Monkeys of Shaolin tells the story of a fisherman named Wei Cheng, whose home was burned down by bandits. Along with him, we will embark on a path of revenge and discover what the bandits are searching for in the villages, and Shaolin monks will join us, with Wei eventually becoming one of them.
The ancient Chinese setting is conveyed just as well as in Game Science's project, despite the vastly different genre — beat 'em up. However, there are no complaints about the combat scenes. If the change in perspective doesn’t bother you, 9 Monkeys will give you the chance to wield a staff and perform familiar moves, and Wei Cheng’s skills will remind you of Monkey King’s abilities.
The combat system is complemented by excellent character progression, but to fully immerse yourself in the nuances and feel the challenge, we recommend starting on the highest difficulty level.
Black Myth: Wukong is a truly distinctive and unique project. I’ve compiled a selection where each game is only partially similar to the adventures of the great Monkey King, but I’ve tried to gather projects where the differences won’t disappoint players!
