During the Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to the Switch 2, a trailer announcing FromSoftware’s new game, created by the authors of Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series, was shown. On April 4, the head of the studio and game designer of the new project The Duskbloods, Hidetaka Miyazaki, along with Nintendo, released an extensive interview detailing the upcoming game. In this article, we’ll tell you what to expect and what to prepare for.

The Story of the World of The Duskbloods

The main protagonists, or playable characters, in the game are known as the "Bloodsworn". This group consists of individuals who have achieved superhuman abilities through the power of a special blood. They resemble vampires, but not the traditional kind, rather more romantically portrayed.

We tried to extract the sort of romantic aspects we found interesting from concepts such as vampires and 'blood' and reinterpreted them as the Bloodsworn.

In The Duskbloods, the heroes compete for an artifact known as "First Blood". Essentially, drawing from past FromSoftware titles, they represent a faction of beings, similar to the Tarnished in Elden Ring or the Ashen One in Dark Souls III. At the end of the world, they are summoned to the Twilight of Humanity to acquire this rare item.

The world of The Duskbloods does not belong to any specific historical era, like the feudal Japan of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or the Victorian era of Bloodborne. Instead, its aesthetics combine various styles. In the trailer, we saw Gothic castles alongside characters dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, as well as buildings from the industrial revolution period.

As you may have already guessed, the atmosphere bears some resemblance to Bloodborne. It has a similar style, and the storyline is related to a special type of blood. For some, this might be disappointing, as they were expecting something new, but Bloodborne fans are surely excited.

According to Hidetaka Miyazaki, blood holds the history of this world, intertwines the fates of its people, and is "the marker of those who have surpassed the limitations of their own humanity."

As of now, this is all we know about the story and world of The Duskbloods. It’s possible that the developers will reveal more details in the future. For now, we can conclude that FromSoftware is staying true to its narrative style. It’s still a world on the brink of destruction, but what’s always been compelling in the studio’s works is the way they present the story, lore, characters, and the tales connected to them. We hope the new game doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

Gameplay and Its Features

Not much is clear from the trailer, but in an interview, the game designer explained the gameplay details in more depth. The key difference from previous games is that The Duskbloods is a PvPvE game. This means players will face both regular enemies and other players. Some players found this decision strange, and some were even put off by it, but let’s not jump to conclusions just yet: this could actually be fun, considering FromSoftware has already mastered creating a robust online experience. So, we’re confident there won’t be a nightmare scenario like in Dark Souls II.

At the beginning, we can choose from a wide range of characters, each with their own unique appearance and abilities. Additionally, the chosen character can be customized to some extent, which is a good thing because there’s an enjoyable aspect to character creation.

The main game starts with the player entering a hub—essentially a base where we create and customize our character before heading to the battlefield. Something similar to what we saw in the Elden Ring Nightreign closed test. The multiplayer mode supports up to 8 players, and after the match is completed, players return to the hub.

Hidetaka Miyazaki also stated that players won’t always fight each other. There may be times when survivors have to team up to defeat a boss. So, the victory conditions in the match will be determined by both the PvP and PvE aspects.

To keep the game from becoming boring, as it may have seemed at first glance, the developers added special events that can occur during matches. The game designer did not go into detail about these events, but we believe there will be special enemies, bosses, and visual changes in the world.

This raises some questions: why did FromSoftware decide to focus on multiplayer games? Hidetaka Miyazaki didn’t explain this, but he assured that the studio will not fully switch to such projects, and PvE-only players have nothing to fear—there will still be plenty of enjoyment for them.

Summary

So, that’s all for now. To summarize, we can say that the new project looks promising. Yes, it’s not entirely clear, and there are some questionable elements, but overall, we’re excited to see what kind of game it will turn out to be. Plus, there’s still plenty of time before the game’s release, so we’re looking forward to more details. One thing is for sure—FromSoftware fans should definitely look forward to this one!

The most intriguing detail, which we’ve saved for the end, is that the game will be released exclusively for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. And judging by Demon Souls and Bloodborne, it’s highly unlikely that the game will officially release on PC or other platforms. So, not all players will be able to try the new game, and the price of the new console is steep. All we can do is wait… We hope this article has provided you with new information about The Duskbloods and piqued your interest in the upcoming FromSoftware project.
