Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Kingdom Come Deliverance IIImage: opencritic.com

  • Release Date: February 4, 2025
  • Developer: Warhorse Studios
  • Download: Steam

If you’re looking for a hardcore medieval game, KCD II is a great choice for spending a few unforgettable hours in this world. The main character has become older and stronger, but have you grown as much since the first part? The game is still as hardcore as ever, though the combat system has changed slightly: instead of 5 strike directions, there are now 4. Even so, players will still have to learn how to fight.

Of course, there are a few new details: a not-so-convenient inventory, the ability to wear multiple outfits at once, learning blacksmithing, crafting potions and weapons, and more.

The storyline is compelling, but if you don’t like a lot of dialogue, it might put you off. Nevertheless, I recommend playing it so you can immerse yourself in the dark and brutal Middle Ages.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Release Date: May 18, 2015
  • Developer: CD PROJEKT RED
  • Download: Steam

It’s impossible to leave this legendary game about the great Witcher out of our top list. Here, you’ll search for Ciri while getting sidetracked by romantic entanglements, Gwent, minor quests, helping others, and so on.

The game captivates with its atmosphere. Players definitely won’t be bored, whether swinging a sword or using magic. The ending depends entirely on your actions, so be sure to read all the dialogues carefully—otherwise, the result may disappoint you. For an even richer experience, I recommend downloading a few mods from this list.

The crafting system, character leveling, the search for improved armor, large and small quests—all of this makes for a classic RPG. Even though it’s fantasy, the medieval vibe is excellently portrayed in this universe.

Medieval Dynasty

  • Release Date: September 23, 2023
  • Developer: Render Cube
  • Download: Steam

Ever dreamed of building your own village in the Middle Ages? You now have a great chance to do so in Medieval Dynasty. Here, you don’t just construct a village; you develop it by attracting new residents and expanding your crafting. For example, you or other villagers can go hunting, cook, or sew clothes for the entire settlement and for sale.

But don’t forget about personal life. The main character must get married and have a child who will eventually grow up to be a fine heir to whatever you’ve managed to build. Children won’t only be born to the main character but to other villagers as well. They won’t grow up in a single day—it takes several years, so be patient. However, time will fly as you’re busy farming, completing quests, hunting, and managing your settlement.

Manor Lords

  • Release Date: April 26, 2024
  • Developer: Slavic Magic
  • Download: Steam

Another game where you can build and develop your own settlement. Created by just one person, this project became super popular in 2024. A recent update delighted many players.

Here, you’re not only constructing a village but also fighting to capture land or defend your own. This aspect certainly adds excitement and interest.

I really love the graphics and the ability to control a character. Yes, your ruler finally feels like a real person—you can see him and control him. Strolling around your holdings has become much more engaging.

Of course, you must keep an eye on the economy. If you mismanage things, the game will end before it really begins. You can read more about it here.

Single-player campaigns are available. If you want to play with friends, hop into multiplayer mode. To keep battles interesting, the developers added terrain and weather systems. These can either help you in combat or hinder you against the enemy.

  • Release Date: October 25, 2022
  • Developer: TaleWorlds Entertainment
  • Download: Steam

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is an RPG featuring elements of medieval warfare, set 200 years before the events of the first game. In this sequel, you’ll find an improved combat system and an expanded game world.

To progress, you’ll need to explore the vast world of Mount & Blade, conquering both neutral and already claimed territories. You can build an army by recruiting new warriors and lead your troops in realistic battles. The game features hundreds of units with unique classes that can be outfitted with any weapons, armor, and horses.

There’s also a multiplayer mode where you can fight against other players in fierce battles.

Beyond combat, the economy is crucial. Sell grain for a good profit. Keep an eye on the feudal economy stats, where any item can become ten times more expensive. Clear trade routes of bandits and resell items to earn in-game currency.

Stronghold Series

  • Release Dates: 2001 to 2021
  • Developer: Firefly Studios
  • Download: Steam

"The people hate you, my lord!" Alright, that was just a lyrical aside. But you really do have to work hard for your people to love you, my lord—otherwise, your reign (and your gameplay) will be short-lived.

Stronghold isn’t just a real-time strategy game—it’s also a city-building simulator. Players must build a castle, finance it, defend it, and conquer other lands. Construct defensive structures, develop the economy, and watch closely whether your citizens are happy under your rule. Also, never forget to keep an eye out for wolves that can sneak in and devour virtually everything!

You’ll face more than just castle sieges—there are enemy assaults to repel, too. You’ll also need to manage your time and resources, collecting them and producing weapons in a timely manner.

Mount & Blade: Warband

  • Release Date: March 31, 2010
  • Developer: TaleWorlds Entertainment
  • Download: Steam

We return to Mount & Blade, but this time to the earlier version, Warband. Here, players can expect a realistic medieval setting with immersive environments that instantly transport you to the age of knights and crusades. Even though it was released in 2010, it still offers excellent immersion in both story and setting.

You can become the ruler of your own kingdom, recruiting knights and gifting them lands. The combat system is reworked and emphasizes parrying and blocking.

Essentially, these two games (Warband and Bannerlord) share a similar concept and gameplay style.

  • Release Date: April 23, 2024
  • Developer: Donkey Crew

Bellwright thrusts players into a world of uprisings and intrigue. Imprisoned for a terrible crime, you must not only clear your name but also lead a revolution against a tyrannical ruler.

Once again, you’ll build and manage settlements, gather resources, and recruit villagers to join your cause. Each new recruit brings valuable skills, strengthening your uprising and unlocking new technologies for your towns.

Players will have to think carefully because your path to victory involves not just military might but also strategic city management.

By liberating villages, you’ll create and expand outposts, organize workers, and train elite soldiers. The game offers deep progression—choose your weapons and armor from many medieval options, and master swordsmanship, archery, or any other fighting style you prefer.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

  • Release Date: November 18, 2014
  • Developer: BioWare
  • Download: EA

A cataclysm has plunged these vast lands into chaos. Dragons darken the sky, striking fear into once-peaceful kingdoms. Mages wage a fierce war against their oppressors, the Templars. Nations turn on each other. It’s up to you, the Inquisitor, to lead the Inquisition, restore order, and stand against the forces of chaos.

This is a classic RPG where you level up your character, craft, do quests, and travel the world. It’s essential not to ignore side quests, which will strengthen the Inquisition’s power.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragons Dogma 2Image: gracz.pc.pl

This is a medieval fantasy—very traditional, complete with brave heroes, powerful magic, and terrifying creatures from Greek, Egyptian, and Celtic mythology. There’s an evil dragon that, once every generation, chooses a human to become the Arisen—making the person "chosen" and granting them immense power, but in exchange taking their still-beating heart.

You must defeat the dragon. That is the sacred mission of every Arisen—to go on a perilous journey, reclaim your heart, and save the world from the winged beast.

The open world here is huge—four times bigger than in the first game—and absolutely packed with points of interest, from enemy camps to hidden treasures and the riddles of the wise Sphinx.

Grappling is a key part of the gameplay. The main character can grab onto almost any nearby object or creature. The companion system is unique: by the story’s logic, the Arisen can summon "pawns," beings from another realm who look human but lack free will.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

  • Release Date: October 17, 2022
  • Developer: Asobo Studio
  • Download: Steam

After defeating the Inquisitor, brother, sister, mother, and young alchemist Lucas flee south to distance themselves as much as possible from destruction and suffering. The mysterious illness afflicting little Hugo has stopped but not disappeared, so the family seeks the help of alchemists who are willing to examine the boy. Suddenly, Hugo collapses and sees an island with a magical bird guiding him to a lake that promises healing. Brother and sister decide to find this place, no matter the cost.

The main new feature in the second part is more spacious—or as people like to say, "open"—locations. While these areas do look wide and richly detailed, don’t be deceived—this freedom is somewhat illusory.

From the start, you’re taught stealth alongside alchemist Lucas, making it clear how crucial this mechanic is. Stealth lovers will enjoy memorizing enemy routes, carefully scanning locations, and rushing before you’re spotted—or taking it slow so you’re not noticed.

Graveyard Keeper

  • Release Date: August 15, 2015
  • Developer: Lazy Bear Games
  • Download: Steam

You take on the role of a graveyard keeper. The character wakes up in the Middle Ages after being hit by a car in the modern world while carelessly crossing the road. Yes, prepare for a fair amount of humor like this.

Your goal is to bury people properly and make money doing it, so it’s essentially an economic simulator. Even though death in this game is nothing more than a business opportunity, the developers also include a love story and a poignant plot that might make you shed a tear.

Foundation

  • Release Date: January 31, 2025
  • Developer: Polymorph Games
  • Download: Steam

This city-building simulator transports you to the medieval era, letting you construct an entire settlement, keep people happy with unique buildings, and learn about how houses and churches were built—of particular note due to constant religious rivalries.

You take on the role of a ruler of a small settlement in medieval Europe. The main goal is to expand the village into a thriving city by managing resources, erecting monumental structures, and ensuring the well-being of your citizens.

You construct houses and other buildings using "smart brushes." These allow you to place only those structures that meet environmental norms and criteria. You can also visually modify everything you build to save on resources.

Banished

  • Release Date: February 18, 2014
  • Developer: Shining Rock Software
  • Download: Steam

Rounding out our list is a city-building simulator with strategy elements, focusing on the careful management of various resources and the development of an isolated society in one specific era—the Middle Ages.

The economy in the game is based on barter—there’s no in-game currency, but you can exchange one resource for another, and every resource has its own market value.

Your most important resource is people, and your goal is not just to expand territory but also to prevent your population from dying out. Once people feel hunger or despair, they start dying.

There are no tech trees or skill lines; you can build any structures you can afford. Gather resources yourself, trade with merchants, and develop different industries in your town. Residents can learn up to twenty professions, and you’ll need to choose which ones to assign based on your city’s needs. You can’t solve everything in one move—you’ll have to plan ahead. It’s all up to you.

That concludes our list of 15 best medieval-themed games! Covering a variety of genres, we’re sure you’ll find something here that piques your interest.
