Although The International is months away, Valve already decided to reveal the tournament format. There are some surprises, but, first, let's have a look at something that hasn't changed. There will be eight teams in the main event of The International. However, this time, they will play on the stage for four days instead of three.

Also, the double-elimination bracket stays, but all of them will start in the upper bracket. It is important, since the only advantage going to the Barclays Arena will be the preferred seeding and not the privilege to lose one match.

The key changes are made to the Road to The International stage. This time, sixteen teams will play in the big Swiss Stage. However, it is not the Swiss Stage we're used to. In 2025 we will have five rounds for most teams, and to qualify directly to The International, you will need four wins. If you suffer four losses, you're out, and if you end the Swiss Stage somewhere in the middle, you will have to play one final match for the main event spot.

This format might not look clear, but it is an interesting experiment. On a side note, TI tickets will go on sale on April 15. Mark your calendars, if you want to visit Hamburg.
