Last year brought plenty of great games, but if one project stood out the most and surprised players and critics alike, it was the indie roguelike Balatro. Beyond critical acclaim, the game, developed by a single person, achieved remarkable commercial success—its sales have surpassed 5 million copies!
Interestingly, just over a month ago, the developer, LocalThunk, was celebrating reaching 3.5 million copies sold. This means that in about 40 days, Balatro sold an additional 1.5 million copies! The likely explanation lies in the The Game Awards effect, something the developer hinted at in a tweet.
Harvey Elliott, CEO of publisher Playstack, called this milestone an incredible achievement worthy of celebration. He also expressed immense pride in both Balatro's developer and the publisher's team.
It’s clear that nearly a year after its release, Balatro is still thriving. The card-based roguelike continues to receive updates with exciting collaborations, and it recently hit a new personal record for peak concurrent players on Steam.
