Blizzard has officially announced that 6v6 match testing will begin in Season 14 of Overwatch 2, allowing players to try out this format in two special modes. Developers initially announced the return of 6v6 matches back in July, noting that this battle format was featured in the original Overwatch but was missing from the sequel’s launch.

Blizzard previously explained that while the 6v6 format had distinct advantages, its downsides could be even more noticeable. For this reason, Overwatch 2 introduced a 5v5 format, despite losing some of the positive aspects of the previous format.

Ultimately, the shift negatively affected player "freedom" and match variety, prompting the team to revisit the 6v6 battle concept.

The tests will be divided into two modes. In the first, players will have flexible compositions with a limit of 3 heroes per role. This mode will be available during the debut week after the season’s launch.

The second test will happen mid-season, featuring a 2-2-2 composition. The developers have adjusted the balance for each test mode (for example, reducing the power of tanks), and Blizzard will be "very closely" monitoring test results along with player interest levels.

Additionally, the team plans to continue testing different variations of the 5v5 format. Specifically, players can expect two more test variations of these battles in the current Season 13, with further details to be shared later.
