In a recent interview with EDGE Magazine, legendary game creator Hideo Kojima revealed a surprising reaction to early feedback on his upcoming title, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Although the game has been well received in early testing phases — both by players and Sony — Kojima expressed disappointment with how unanimously positive the reactions were.

Kojima, known for pushing boundaries in storytelling and game design, hoped the sequel would once again divide opinions. He stressed that controversy and differing reactions are part of what makes games meaningful. Reflecting on his development philosophy, he explained that he doesn’t want his creations to please everyone.

“I listen to criticism if the controls need work or the camera moves too fast or too slow. But I don’t change themes or stories based on feedback. Of course, I want people to play my games, so I have to listen to some degree. But also, I’m not interested in creating something that appeals to everyone.”

Looking back, he recalled that initial testing for the first Death Stranding revealed that six out of ten testers thought it was “terrible,” which he viewed as a good sign. Now, the sequel's more action-oriented focus seems to have satisfied all testers — a result Kojima finds less creatively exciting.
