NetEase's newcomer continues gaining traction, with fresh NewZoo data confirming: the game has transformed from just another competitive shooter into a genuine alternative for those disillusioned with Overwatch. The research reveals 45% of players who abandoned Blizzard's title in December 2024 opted for this new hero shooter instead. Even the nostalgic OW: Classic event, which temporarily revived interest in the original mechanics, failed to reverse the trend.
Launched merely in late 2024, the project has already cracked Steam's top 10 by total playtime and secured third place among last year's releases, surpassed only by Helldivers 2 and Palworld. Notably, while most other 2024 free-to-play titles either shut down or lost over 90% of their audience, Marvel Rivals maintains a stable player base.
Analysts attribute its success not just to Marvel's brand power but to thoughtful game design. Unlike Overwatch 2, where mechanics grew increasingly convoluted, Marvel Rivals delivers straightforward, dynamic gameplay. Developers also prioritized visual appeal - the charismatic roster (featuring both male and female heroes) clearly resonates with players.
Marvel Rivals appears to have struck the perfect balance: spectacle, accessibility and style without unnecessary bloat. Though activity has dipped slightly since January's peak, Season 2 could potentially draw millions back to the game.
