Sledgehammer Games, one of Activision's internal studios, is undergoing significant reorganizational changes. Despite these changes, they are not hindering the team from working and planning the next installment of the popular Call of Duty series. It is reported that specialists from Sledgehammer Games will become the leading creators of Call of Duty in 2027, meaning that the shooter will be in development for over three years.
This information became known through the gaming portal Insider Gaming, which managed to communicate with one of the employees of Sledgehammer Games. It turns out that at the beginning of 2024, the studio lost its main office in California and is now looking for a new workplace — in a smaller office. The move should not affect the development of future games, as employees have been transitioned to fully remote work.
Developers will temporarily work from home on Call of Duty 2027. Meanwhile, their colleagues from Infinity Ward are working on Call of Duty 2026, which is expected to be released in the Modern Warfare universe. As for Call of Duty 2025, it is known that the shooter is planned as a semi-futuristic sequel to Black Ops 2 with the codename Saturn.
Thus, the expected "release schedule" for CoD in the coming years now looks as follows:
- Call of Duty 2024 — Treyarch (tentative title Black Ops: Gulf War);
- Call of Duty 2025 (presumably a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2);
- Call of Duty 2026 — Infinity Ward (presumably in the Modern Warfare universe);
- Call of Duty 2027 — Sledgehammer Games.
Previously, Activision President Rob Kostich mentioned that the company already has plans for new Call of Duty series games extending up to 2027.
