The team at Obsidian Entertainment aims to reintroduce that same sense of unpredictability and threat into their new RPG, which once made Fallout: New Vegas a cult classic. The inspiration came from the infamous moment when an inexperienced player, venturing north of Goodsprings, would suddenly find themselves face-to-face with deadly Deathclaws. In the sequel, The Outer Worlds' world will become even more brutal and unpredictable, with danger lurking around every corner.

As emphasized by systems designer Kyle Canning, the combat system has received a significant upgrade—firefights are now more dynamic, borrowing elements from Destiny and Call of Duty. However, the core remains the same: it’s a deep RPG focused on exploration, freedom of choice, and unexpected twists. Yet, danger can also be overcome in other ways—through stealth, which has also undergone major improvements.

Game director Brandon Adler clarified that locations will be just as dense and detailed as in New Vegas. Players can expect numerous character progression options and the ability to create unique builds by experimenting with different playstyles.

The release of The Outer Worlds 2 is still scheduled for 2025.
