Rockstar Games will release Grand Theft Auto 6 initially only on consoles. But why will PC users have to wait longer? Mike York — a former animator from Rockstar's Massachusetts division, who contributed to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, tried to answer this question.
As the first reason, the animator cited the prevalence of PlayStation consoles.
The PC port comes later because Rockstar prioritizes what sells. Most of the time, especially in the past, PlayStation was in huge demand. Everyone wanted this console. It sold in volumes that mostly exceed the results of any other console.
For example, York talked about the production of GTA 5. Versions for PS3 and Xbox 360 were developed simultaneously. However, it was from the Sony console that the team tried to squeeze everything possible for excellent performance.
The second and main reason for the delay of the PC version is the peculiarities of production and testing. When specialists start working on the computer version, ideas for improving the project immediately appear.
More time is spent specifically on optimizing the game for different systems. If consoles mostly have the same architecture and graphics card, then on PC there are a great many combinations of elements.
Another reason is the lack of people and resources to simultaneously work on PC and consoles.
We don't have that much money, people, and resources. Therefore, we have to set priorities for the benefit of the company. What will bring in more money? Most likely, PlayStation. So let's direct all our energy to PlayStation, then to Xbox, and then to PC.
