Full reviews for the Borderlands movie from various publications have surfaced online following its world premiere. Prior to this, some media outlets had briefly shared their initial impressions on social media.

As of the time of writing, the film holds a rating of 27 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 29 reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the tomatometer is at very low 6%, based on 72 reviews.

In these full reviews, journalists have criticized all the key elements of the movie. Some praise was given to a few actors — Cate Blanchett and Jack Black, who had previously been mentioned positively, were joined by Ariana Greenblatt, who played Tiny Tina. However, even the voice acting of the robot Claptrap received mixed reviews.

Many outlets concluded that director Eli Roth created a poor imitation of James Gunn’s "Guardians of the Galaxy". Reviewers summarized that fans of the original shooters will likely be disappointed, and those unfamiliar with the franchise may be confused by the chaotic plot.

Despite this, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford have asked audiences to give the film a chance and not pay attention to the criticism. The film premiered on August 8.
