In the latest Deadlock update, an observant Reddit user under the nickname u/dirtkiller23 discovered a mysterious string labeled "Tf", later verified by renowned dataminer and insider Tyler McVicker. While the two letters clearly reference Team Fortress, their true meaning remains a mystery.
This is not just a random artifact from old code. Analysis of the file structure indicates that the string was added after both Deadlock and CS2, suggesting it's a recent inclusion.
The discovery of the string in the Source 2 folder led to speculation about a possible port, similar to CS:GO and Dota 2 transitioning to the new engine. However, insider dismissed these theories, explaining that such a project would likely be labeled 'Tf_imported' or 'Tf_Source_2', and that experiments with porting were already conducted back in 2014.
Alternative theories include a sequel or a spin-off, but these remain pure speculation for now. The only certainty is this: if the abbreviation truly relates to Team Fortress, Valve may indeed be working on a new project.
Still, fans should temper their expectations. The company has a notorious history of canceling unannounced initiatives—just remember the fate of L4D3 or early drafts of HL3. Leaks remain nothing more than hints until the company officially announces the product.
What's even more intriguing: Deadlock evolved from "Citadel"—originally set in Half-Life's universe (according to insider Gabe Follower, it took place in City 17 during the Seven-Hour War)—through Neon Prime, before becoming a final product completely detached from its roots. The same could happen with this new project—if it even exists and makes it to release.
