Sony Corporation has released its financial results for the fourth quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, which ended on March 31, 2025. The report highlights key metrics related to PlayStation 5 sales, game content, and player engagement.
During the reporting quarter, the company shipped 2.8 million PS5 unitsâ1.7 million fewer than in the same period in 2023. Despite the decline, cumulative global sales of the console since its November 2020 launch have reached 77.8 million units. This allows the PS5 to gradually narrow the gap with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, which has sold over 117 million units in total.
As for game software, 76.1 million copies of PS4 and PS5 titles were sold during the quarterâ3.5 million more than the previous year. However, interest in Sonyâs first-party exclusives declined: the companyâs in-house studios sold just 5.9 million copies compared to 12.3 million in last yearâs report. Of particular note is the share of digital salesâ80% of the total volume. This figure confirms the growing popularity of disc-free gaming among players.
Additionally, the report notes an increase in PlayStation Networkâs user base: monthly active users reached 124 million, up by 6 million compared to the previous year.
In summary, despite lower console shipments and reduced demand for Sonyâs exclusives, the PlayStation ecosystem continues to show positive growth, driven by rising digital sales and an expanding base of active users.
