This year, World of Warcraft celebrates its 20th anniversary — a milestone for the iconic MMORPG that has seen numerous expansions and updates over the years. According to Blizzard developers, there is no need for a "reboot" of the game as its core systems are constantly evolving.
Game Director Ion Hazzikostas shared this perspective, explaining that while a reboot might be a theoretical possibility in the distant future, the game already has a dedicated community that the developers strive to support. Hazzikostas likened WoW to the Ship of Theseus, where every mechanic of the RPG has been rebuilt and changed over time. For him, the WoW Classic is an excellent reminder and example of the game's evolution.
In his view, the continuous updates are the best way to adapt the game for modern audiences. This philosophy also applies to the temporary events frequently introduced in World of Warcraft. However, these events sometimes present challenges — some are initially too difficult, leading Blizzard to simplify them, a pattern Hazzikostas sees as a recurring trend. For the game director, finding a balance is essential: players should feel rewarded while also enjoying their time in new events.
During twenty years, World of Warcraft had its ups and downs, yet it is always interesting to learn a bit of modern vision that developers share.
