A trailer has been released for the documentary Grand Theft Hamlet, which was created within Grand Theft Auto Online.

The film follows two actors, Mark and Sam, as they attempt to stage William Shakespeare's Hamlet inside the popular Rockstar game. Their story began in 2021 when they lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With newfound free time, the friends started spending a lot of it in GTA: Online and decided to try producing the play.

The film about this initiative initially premiered at this year's South by Southwest festival, where it received highly positive reviews. Viewers described it as both funny and touching.  The trailer announces that the film will be released in regular theaters in the UK and Ireland on December 6, with broader streaming availability expected in early 2025.

The trailer itself shows various in-game landscapes where the actors recite lines from the play — until the chaos of GTA inevitably interrupts their performance, a place where questions like "To be or not to be?" usually don't have much weight.

It's hard to say what Shakespeare himself would think of this adaptation, but the creators can hardly be accused of lacking originality.
