The series Like a Dragon: Yakuza premiered today. This adaptation of the popular video game franchise by SEGA and studio Ryu Ga Gotoku was released on the streaming service Prime Video.
The show's script is inspired by the plot of the original action game, which was released in 2005. The adaptation takes place across two timelines, with a ten-year gap, set in the fictional district of Kamurocho in Tokyo. The story focuses on a young yakuza, Kazuma Kiryu, who becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving his close friend.
The lead roles are played by Ryoma Takeuchi, Kento Kaku, Munetaka Aoki, Yumi Kawai, and Toshiaki Karasawa.
Initial reviews of Like a Dragon: Yakuza from media outlets have been mixed. Different journalists gave it scores from 2 out of 5 to 4 out of 5. This brings up the curiosity but also builds the cautious approach.
Three out of six episodes are currently available to watch on Amazon Prime, with the second half set to be released on November 1.
