A few years ago, Guy "DrDisrespect" Beahm set out to revolutionize the gaming industry by creating a game that would stand out from everything that came before it. He founded Midnight Society, a studio dedicated to developing a vertical battle royale. The project was called Deadrop, and it was tied to NFTs, allowing fans to invest in the game by purchasing digital assets.
Fast forward to January 2025. DrDisrespect is permanently banned from Twitch, his reputation has taken a massive hit, and Midnight Society—which had cut ties with the streamer months earlier—has shut down entirely.
Deadrop never saw the light of day, leaving 55 employees jobless and investors with nothing to show for their contributions. In its official statement, Midnight Society did not clarify whether it would refund players, but given the current situation, the most likely answer is no.
While Midnight Society’s downfall isn’t as catastrophic as, say, last year’s high-profile collapse of Concord, it’s still a disappointing turn of events. It’ll be interesting to see if any lawsuits emerge from this, but if they do, we won’t be hearing about them today.
