Recently, a story made headlines about how Nintendo independently deanonymized the leader of a piracy group for Switch games using his old Reddit posts. Now, the Japanese company has set its sights on simplifying the process of catching wrongdoers — it wants access to data from major tech companies and online platforms.
Nintendo is seeking court approval to request business records from Reddit, Google, Github, Cloudflare, and others. This is necessary to find potential "partners" of James Williams — the administrator of the SwitchPirates thread on Reddit, whom Nintendo is currently suing.
The company revealed that it has discovered numerous other users who may have been part of pirate shops. In this case, this likely refers to devices designed to copy games from cartridges. Upon obtaining information about potential violators, Nintendo intends to file copyright infringement lawsuits. The Japanese gaming company has also directly contacted Reddit.
Nintendo is fiercely protective of its intellectual property and will likely pursue this case to the end. There's also another compelling reason for this: the upcoming launch of the next generation of consoles, piracy of which could significantly harm profits.
