Sony at CES 2025 revealed details of Until Dawn, which will be released in spring. The authors, including director David Sandberg (“Shazam”), decided to move away from the familiar plot and tell a new story in a familiar setting, preserving the dark atmosphere and spirit of the original game.

“The key to successful game adaptations is respecting the source material,” Screen Gems head Ashley Brooks told CES 2025. “We try to find a balance between what fans love and something new to appeal to a wide audience.”

Interestingly, one of the characters from the original game will still appear in the movie. Actor Peter Stormare will return to the role of Dr. Hill, the enigmatic psychiatrist who interacted with players in the original. “This movie is an homage to the horror genre and I'm excited to be a part of it,” he noted.

Although the plot and characters will be new, the movie will retain the game's core leitmotif: a group of friends face horrific threats and have to fight for survival. Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino and Odessa Azzion are among the stars of the new project. However, as Brooks noted, the decision to dramatically update the story was made in the interest of creating a “truly thrilling and creepy spectacle.”

This decision is a consequence of the fact that the surprise factor plays an important role in such horror films, and the original scenario is familiar to many: the game was released in 2015, and in 2024 its remake was released, including the PC version.

Until Dawn is scheduled to premiere on April 25, 2025.
