In recent days, Microsoft has been making questionable moves. The Verge reports that the company is seeking "small and prestigious games", which surprised many, considering Microsoft just shut down the team that released exactly such a title.
According to the magazine, head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty held a meeting for employees a day after announcing the closure of four studios. Booty noted that Xbox needs "less large-scale games that will bring awards and prestige". He may have been referring to games with shorter production cycles, as Hi-Fi RUSH was first discussed at Tango back in 2017.
The Verge did not share other details of the meeting but suggested that Xbox executives might have failed to capitalize on Hi-Fi RUSH's success, despite wanting an AA-scale hit.
It seems Microsoft is searching for a new strategy for its game studios. Closing four teams and focusing on "small and prestigious games" could indicate that the company wants to optimize resources and gain more recognition in the industry. However, the closure of Tango Gameworks, the studio behind the successful Hi-Fi RUSH, raises questions.
