We might not like some of the methods different corporations use to protect their product, but the main indicator of success is the money. YouTube’s revenue from advertising and contracts with advertisers reached a record high by the end of 2024. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, shared this data in its latest financial report.

In the Q4 of 2024, YouTube generated over $10.5 billion from ad sales and displays, marking the platform’s highest earnings in its quarterly reports. For comparison, during the same period in 2023, YouTube brought in only $9.2 billion—12% less than in 2024.

At the beginning of 2024, YouTube launched an aggressive campaign against ad blockers. The platform began testing several technologies designed to prevent third-party apps from hiding ads. For example, Google was caught attempting to slow down the service’s loading speed for users with ad blockers. Later, YouTube started displaying a black screen instead of ads and eventually introduced unskippable ads lasting up to ten hours.
