RPG is a unique genre that can captivate players for countless hours, yet it can also become so overwhelming that you might not touch a game for days or even months. Nonetheless, such projects have the power to take players on unforgettable adventures.

This article presents a selection of the 10 best RPGs released in 2024. Get your hardware ready for a Christmas workout, because the holidays with these games might turn out to be absolutely amazing.

Black Myth: Wukong

Kicking off our list is the now-famous monkey-themed game that made a loud splash in 2024. Recently, Chinese developers have been delighting us with new projects, and Black Myth: Wukong is no exception. In this semi-open-world adventure, you’ll explore locations and battle enemies, some of which are far from easy to defeat.

At the heart of the story is a character named Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King. He faces the daunting task of defeating challenging bosses, each of whom will test hardcore RPG fans to their limits. You’ll need to learn attack timings, use dodges, counterattacks, parries, and more. In other words, the game includes all the mechanics players love in Dark Souls. Even standard enemies aren’t pushovers, as they can transform into other creatures like bats.

The Chinese style combined with a dark tone sets the entire atmosphere of the title. Exploring such a world is both intriguing and, to some extent, unusual.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Next on our list is a game from one of my favorite series. Many claim that it’s unnecessary to play the previous installments, but I still recommend doing so, as you risk missing parts of the story — especially if your journey into the series begins with FFVII Rebirth.

One of the standout features is the stunning, meticulously detailed graphics. Exploring this world is captivating. You’ll control seven characters, which might seem challenging at first but becomes second nature over time.

In this installment, Cloud and his friends leave Midgar to embark on a journey across a vast open world. They’ll face new adventures, discoveries, dangers, and, of course, chocobo rides (I absolutely love those feathered friends).

Rebirth picks up where Remake left off. Part of Midgar is destroyed, the Whispers are defeated, and Cloud and his companions leave the city to pursue Sephiroth. Along the way, the protagonist uncovers dark secrets about himself, learns to live in the present, and tries to understand who he truly is.

Dragon's Dogma 2

In a world where dragons symbolize both destruction and rebirth, your fate is tied to one of these mighty creatures. Dragon's Dogma 2 continues the story of the first game but immerses players in a darker, more complex conflict. You take on the role of the Arisen, navigating a path strewn with mythical creatures, political intrigues, and breathtaking landscapes where every tree whispers of an impending storm.

Pawns, your loyal companions, do more than follow you around. They gather information, collect items, and point out treasure locations.

The game’s high difficulty can be a drawback for newcomers, especially those unfamiliar with the genre. However, this challenge is precisely what makes Dragon's Dogma 2 special — it pushes you to grow as a player.

This isn’t a game you can dip into "for five minutes". Its atmosphere and fair yet demanding trials draw you in.

Our world teeters on the brink, and players assume the role of a guide navigating alternate dimensions. You’ll choose between two protagonists to embark on a journey filled with monster battles and questing.

The story begins when magic and powerful entities invade the modern world. Humanity nearly perishes, with only a few survivors adapting to strange technologies from a parallel fantasy realm.

The game features two modes: Exploration and Combat. In Exploration mode, players wander through environments, collect treasures, and solve puzzles. When encountering enemies, the game shifts to Combat mode, where quick reflexes and timing are tested. Each fight involves chaining attacks into combos.

Last Epoch

Stepping through mysterious temporal rifts, you find yourself in a world where the future, present, and past merge into a chaotic vortex. Last Epoch is an ARPG where every choice made in antiquity can alter the course of events in the future. Exciting? Absolutely.

With dozens of subclasses, hundreds of skills, and the ability to tweak abilities on the fly, the game poses the eternal question: what’s the best build for progression — a versatile tank or a mage who incinerates everything in sight? There’s no definitive answer, as the flexible system allows players to craft characters tailored to their unique play style.

While its visuals might not rival juggernauts like Diablo IV, the game’s strength lies in its depth and potential.

The game also features crafting systems, intense battles with mutants, and bosses that won’t let players relax or defeat them easily. Players will explore diverse landscapes and uncover new stories, making the adventures even more captivating.

Additionally, the game includes a detailed skill tree system, allowing abilities to be customized and adapted to your preferred play style.

First, players must assemble a team of four, composed of brave warriors with unique abilities. If you enjoy teamwork, this title is perfect, as coordination is key to executing spectacular battles. Properly dodging, blocking attacks, and activating synergy between characters for combined strikes will be essential.

The game boasts a rich roster of heroes with distinct styles. Several unique characters can be added to your team as you unlock "party member cards". Each character levels up through battles, and their weapons can also be enhanced, with magical stones and sigils added to boost attack, health, critical damage, and more.

Let’s stay in the anime world as we explore Persona 3 Reload. This time, players step into the shoes of a high school student who stumbles upon a hidden reality called the Dark Hour. This "hour" exists between days, shrouded in darkness and teeming with monstrous Shadows. To survive, you must awaken your inner Persona and fight these creatures alongside your team.

Gameplay is split into two parts: day and night. During the day, you’re an ordinary student, while at night, you transform into a hero tasked with unraveling mysteries. Your school becomes a tower you must climb to its peak.

Each character has their own Persona with unique powers, while the main character can wield multiple Personas, enabling gameplay variety in battles.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Let’s move from a gloomy school setting to a seemingly more welcoming location. Two main protagonists embark on a Pacific adventure where players will complete various quests — a classic RPG setup.

One of the characters is Kasuga, who is no stranger to overcoming life’s challenges. The other is Kiryu, a weathered veteran who has endured countless hardships. Together, they face an unknown threat, and players must guide them strategically to ensure their success.

The battles are turn-based, with players controlling the protagonist and up to three party members during combat. Each character can move within a limited radius, perform standard attacks, or use special skills. Keep an eye on the protagonist’s health — if they fall in battle, the entire party is defeated.

Wuthering Waves

Closing our list is an open-world RPG where players take control of the main character, Rover, and their allies. At first glance, the similarities to Genshin Impact are apparent: exploring an open world, fighting mobs and mini-bosses, gathering resources, solving puzzles, completing quests, and so on. Here are some standout features:

Combat is dynamic and varied, allowing players to dodge or even parry enemy attacks. While characters cannot change weapon types, you can switch freely between them during battles to mix up your strategy.

The story is simple: the protagonist loses their memory, and both dark and light forces try to sway them. However, player decisions do not impact the plot’s direction.
