We don’t often cover news from the Super Smash Bros. community, but today, unfortunately, brings some deeply saddening news. Abdulaziz 'Hax' Al-Yami died at 30 years old. The news was shared by Hungrybox, one of the most well-known figures in the Smash community.
Hax was ranked among the top 10 players in 2013-2014. He also played a major role in popularizing the "20XX" meme and worked extensively on the development and legalization of hitbox-style controllers, after suffering a hand injury that made using a standard controller problematic for him.
It’s impossible to discuss Hax’s life without mentioning the controversy surrounding him. In June 2021, he released a video accusing Leffen of being a threat to the Smash community, which led to over 20 tournament organizers banning him from competing. However, over time, Hax was partially unbanned. In 2023, he won DreamHack Atlanta and Coinbox 68, among other events.
Al-Yami’s family has set up a GoFundMe page, which raised $40,000 in donations within a single day.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Smash Melee community.
