The first matches of The International 2024 are set to begin the day after tomorrow. Although Valve technically brands this as the Road to The International, we will see all sixteen teams in action. Today, the organizers of the Dota 2 World Championship revealed the lineups for the four groups.
In these groups, every team will play against each other. To be honest, the group stage serves as a chance for everyone to ease into the tournament: the organizers can iron out any issues that arise, the teams can get a feel for the tournament's atmosphere and overall meta, and the spectators can start following the teams.
From a competitive standpoint, the group stage has limited stakes: teams are competing for better seeding in the playoffs, but the main fun begins on September 6th. At that point, the first loss will drop a team into the lower bracket, and the second loss will send them home.
The tournament's prize pool currently exceeds $2,350,000 slightly — largely because the compendium, once again dedicated only to the tournament, lacks any prestigious in-game items. Nevertheless, the chance to raise the Aegis of Champions is still far more enticing than money for many, so we're in for some thrilling matches.
