We often talk about cheating in competitive games, but there are far fewer headlines when it comes to match-fixing. First of all, we usually only barely scratch this underground world. Second of all, it is hard to gatther verifiable information. And it is more interesting to see estimations of those who work on fair game in both traditional sports and esports.
The statistics were shared by the Swiss company Sportradar, which specializes in data collection and analysis for sports and betting organizations. In 2024, 32 match-fixing incidents were recorded in esports, which is 14 fewer than in 2023. In terms of the number of fixed matches, esports ranked fifth in 2024, trailing behind football, basketball, tennis, and table tennis. In esports, cases of match-fixing occurred approximately once every 1,190 matches.
We should take this data with a huge grain of salt. Sportradar mentions the analysis included games from traditional esports disciplines such as Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, but we don't have the full list of games. Secondly, we don't know how deep were they searching. It is not hard to imagine only 32 match fixes on big international events. However, the situation is far more grim on the semi-pro level. That being said, it is still great that esports is being investigated from the fair play point of view.
