Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has released another trailer for its upcoming sci-fi adventure The Alters which is steadily approaching its release date. This time, the creators took a moment to reflect on one of their most iconic projects: the wartime survival game This War of Mine which brought the studio global recognition over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is known for its bleak and hopeless atmosphere, The Alters leans into a more passionate and often humorous narrative centered around the struggles of alternate versions of protagonist Jan Dolski. Despite these tonal differences, the developers emphasize a profound connection between the two titles.
Though the games are vastly different in setting and tone, both revolve around the theme of survival. In This War of Mine players navigate the harsh realities of war in a besieged city, managing resources and enduring day-to-day challenges to keep their group alive. Meanwhile, The Alters presents survival as a race against time, where players must constantly move their mobile base to avoid being consumed by an unforgiving sun that turns everything to dust.
Both games push players out of their comfort zones, forcing them to venture into hostile environments in search of scarce resources. The key difference lies in the protagonists: in This War of Mine players guide a group of random civilians, while The Alters features a unique team composed of alternate versions of the main character.
The Alters is set to launch in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from day one.
