While we're used to simultaneous releases on PC and both Xbox and PlayStation, usually Nintendo Switch has a separate window due to limits of the console. Interestingly, Sid Meier's Civilization VII won't follow the same pattern and will be released on the Nintendo gaming console on the same day.
The success of Sid Meier's Civilization VI on the Nintendo Switch significantly influenced Firaxis Games' plans for the development of the next installment. Due to the increased interest in the strategy game on the Switch, the company decided to release Civilization VII simultaneously on all current platforms. This was revealed by Firaxis Executive Producer Dennis Shirk.
After the release of Civilization VI on the Switch, Firaxis discovered that many PC players also purchased the game for the portable console to play on the go. As a result, Civilization VI became a true hit, leading the studio to realize there was clear demand from the audience.
Following the success of the sixth game, Firaxis decided to launch Civilization VII on the Switch with cross-play functionality. This approach had a major impact on development, as porting such a large game to a portable console was challenging, Shirk admitted.
Despite the challenges, the Firaxis team adopted a new approach to development, which they say not only improved the game but also created a unique experience for players across all platforms.
Let's hope this is indeed true and Firaxis managed to bring the best possible version on every console, because fans won't forgive if Civilization on PS5 will feel the same as on Switch.
