With the release date of Death Stranding 2 announced, fans have been revisiting the original game to refresh their memories of Sam Bridges’ epic journey. One such fan, ShakeMistake, took his nostalgia to new heights by playing Death Stranding on a treadmill—while carrying a real baby in a sling, echoing the protagonist’s iconic setup.
ShakeMistake shared an 8-minute timelapse video showcasing his innovative approach. Every step he took on the treadmill translated into his character’s movements in the game, creating a seamless blend of real-world action and virtual gameplay. His six-month-old son, snugly secured in a baby carrier, added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.
This unique setup was made possible by a custom mod that replaced the standard controller with a leg-mounted motion sensor. The sensor converted his treadmill steps into in-game progress, enabling autonomous movement and balancing mechanics within the game. While ShakeMistake traversed rocky landscapes, his son often napped peacefully, oblivious to the virtual adventure unfolding around him.
Reflecting on his project, ShakeMistake explained it as a tribute to Death Stranding’s core theme of bridging disconnection. “Sam carries the weight of a broken society in the game, but here I am, literally carrying the future,” he quipped in a post-stream interview. His creative experiment not only honored Hideo Kojima’s vision but also highlighted the profound connections between gaming and real life.
