Amid Bungie's intense ARG activity surrounding their upcoming game, renowned insider Tom Henderson confirmed that key gameplay details about Marathon he reported two years ago remain accurate. The game will feature three expansive maps, one of which was briefly shown in the latest teaser. Each map will be filled with secrets, with more being added through seasonal updates.
The standout feature of Marathon is its unique oxygen system, which acts as a match timer. Players will need to act quickly—running out of air will lead to suffocation. Oxygen can be replenished using canisters found on the map or purchased at inflated prices from vendors before a match.
Combat mechanics introduce unconventional elements:
- Torso shots damage the oxygen system, accelerating air consumption
- Head injuries cause temporary blurred vision
- Unique perks (faster revives, oxygen efficiency) unlock progressively
- Special abilities provide tactical advantages like night vision
Gameplay follows a repeatable cycle: selecting a mission, gearing up, completing objectives, uncovering secrets, and extracting. Key points:
- Permanent death results in loot loss (weapons, artifacts, currency, etc.)
- Implants may break upon character death
- Perks persist after death
Marathon is being touted as the "ultimate live-service game" with incredibly fast match loading times and high replayability.
A full gameplay showcase is set for April 12, 2025. The game is expected to launch in 2025 or 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
